Traffic copter goes down near Joe Pool Lake

The chopper lost power and came to rest in a wooded area about two miles south of I-20 before 7:00 AM Monday. Looks like everybody is okay, but pretty shaken up. The pilot did a great job, according to Fox 4's Chip Waggoner. Also on board was KVIL's Julie DeHarty.

Julie was hurt, just a cut across her head. No one else was injured. The chopper was apparently totaled; it ended up on its side.

Heard a breif snippet indicating the feds are getting involved with the investigation of this incident, on the TSN news feed at 6:55 this afternoon. I missed the reason for this.

Protocol: Any time an aircraft goes down in the US and its territories ,large or small, the NTSB always investigate, Same holds true for ferry boats, passenger trains, trucks with hazardous chemicals

I wouldn't doubt proto... But it sounded like there's a specific reason beyond proto. Wish I had been paying closer attention.

The helicopter company has a bad record in maintaince, etc one tragedy in Baltimore a few years back, NYC, when one crashed into the Hudson river while live on the air, plus the KVIL Chopper with John ,Starlene and co.

Ahhhh, I bet that's what it was they were mentioning on the newscast. I thought I heard them state the FBI was getting involved.

I seriously doubt that the FBI would be involved in any capacity other than perhaps doing a routine check on the pilot - - maybe - - and I say that only because he also flies for Fort Worth Police Department which I'm assuming would have also already done an extensive background check to work there....
The NTSB is the investigating agency for a matter such as this UNLESS something untoward was found in an initial investigation and there is no indication of any such thing. It appears to be a simple engine out situation with the pilot auto-rotating and landing in rough terrain.

I don't know, Steve...

If the motor failed as a result of shoddy maintenance, I’d consider that pretty major. Remember the Katrina bus?

The Fox article, "News Chopper Makes Hard Landing" cites Julie DeHarty as a KRLD Traffic Reporter. I hope she's okay.
