Traffic Reporter

Well it looks like the beginning of a change over at Metro Traffic... Is it the start to the demise? After many years...Deanna Lee Stone is leaving. How many other traffic people will follow? That place is like a black hole, once your in, you can't get out! Most of those traffic reporters have been there forever, only a few has actually gotten out and gone on to do other radio... (eg. Rebbecca Morse-Whitten, Johnny Skidmarks). So what's the future for Deanna? Now that she crawled out of the pit of radio... Where's she going? Rumor is the pay is awful and we all know the hours are tough... and how many stations are going to renew their contracts? Clear Channel got their own traffic crew... What's Cidadel gonna do?

I just heard Gresh on the Score saying that this is her last day- had no idea. She's been doing traffic for quite a few years, good for her to get out! I don't know what she's gonna do, they didn't say. I thought maybe she would go over to Pro-fm or something (they still have yet to have a permanent night jock, right?) But if the score is saying goodbye, doesn't look like she's gonna go to Cidadel. That's a shame, I think she sounds good, good enough to be a jock. Whatever she does, good luck to her! As for Metro, I think things will slowly fall apart for them. If Mike Sheridan ever decides to leave or retire... well there goes the neighborhood! LOL I think every station should have there own traffic people. With the DOT cameras and such, anyone can see what the traffic is like.

If Mike Sheridan ever leaves, any of a number of morning shows would be crazy not to pick him up as part of their crews. He's quick on the comeback & a master of the one-liner.

Oh Mr Big Mouth, you really dont know half the story do you?

Dee has decided to pursue another opportunity, and I certainly wish her well for the future.

You also seem distressed that Metro appears to be this black hole, and no-one has gone on to do other radio.. Well Mike Sheridan has made a very successful (25 years) career at Metro.. How many DJs have come and gone in that time on the Providence airwaves? Dave and Vic have both been on-air with Metro for many years, and this Christmas I'll be celebrating my 7th anniversary.

Yeah, the hours are tough, and the work can be frustrating, (I assure you traffic news isnt just a case of looking at the camera.. You really need to be able to analyze what you are seeing too!), but we each have our own reasons for being there, working the hours we do. No one in Westwood One is holding a gun to our heads to be there, and if we didnt like it, we all know where to door out of the building is!

Regards

Jazzy

Yeah, what jazzy said. I'm agreeing with Geoff?

Mike Sheridan

Good Luck to Deanna, and I'll see the afternoon Metro folks monday afternoon. :)

Has Metro ever had a traffic copter (or) has it always relied on reports from the ground? I'm not really educated on how traffic is gathered in Rhode Island.

I dont plan on going into the full details on how I gather traffic, but to answer your question about aircraft, Metro did use the services of a company at TF Green, Providence to gather information from the air. Aircraft N49479 and N26GS were both used, would be refered to as Airborne One in our office, but by their registrations on ATC.

The plane obviously would fly over Providence, but would be sent to cover incidents elsewhere in the State, or east over Fall River, and north as far as the Mansfield rest area/I495 area in Massachusetts. North of the I495 line is the responsibility of Metro Boston, and the airspace rules had different qualifications.
