Traffic Reports

Do all the traffic services think freeways and surface roads that are South of downtown Dallas are in South Dallas?

Case in point.....This morning I was listening to the Doyle King give his traffic report and he reported that there was a wreck in South Dallas on EB I-20 and Bonnie View. That is not South Dallas, that is OAK CLIFF. In another report there was an accident at NB 35 and Marsalis...again he said that was South Dallas. That's OAK CLIFF.

When you've only seen south of I-30 from the air or the exit ramp on hwy 67 to the airport to copter out. That's what you get.

That's a poor excuse. I don't travel much north of Downtown but I know the different areas.

Thats damn near Lancaster, not realllly Oak Cliff...It wouldn't surprise me if the PDs have an edict about this. LIke it or not, most folks associate "Oak Cliff" with negative connotations. Just say South Dallas instead

Hang on now...I think you'll hear the same generalities used everywhere in town by traffic reporters. Oak Cliff is STILL not a city. Even places like Pleasant Grove, Highland Park and Univ Park/"Park Cities" are seldom addressed that way on the radio. (There's even a piece of U.P. that runs up to 75-Central.) And I'd never heard anyone designate "northwest Dallas" until I started doing it (my name for the upper Stemmons corridor, like between Mockingbird-ish and 635.) Same for "southwest Dallas" (20-67/"Red Bird" area) and northeast Dallas (generally the 75243 ZIP code.)

Now if you want apples-to-apples, and since Oak Cliff is not a city, do you ever hear identifiers like "Metrocrest," "Park Central," "Parkdale," "Hamilton Park," etc.? Now Laura Houston DOES indeed say Oak Cliff, along with Pleasant Grove, Fair Park, Farmers Branch and other "region" names (thus so did I on my reports. It puts the listener quickly into a mindset before I even give any details.)

Then again, you have Alexa on Ch 8 that uses "Quad Cities," a very obscure term for the Mid-Cities (H-E-B) PLUS North Richland Hills.

Then again, if you want a different approach to the Oak Cliff issue, it could be that most traffic reporters couldn't properly pronounce the region, anyway. How many people put a hard "K" on "Oak" and pause briefly and then say "Cliff"? Most times it comes out, "O'Cliff." Similar to the people who think "Fort" and "Worth" rhyme ("Furt Wurth.")

And before you bust any further on Doyle, he was born and raised here, lived here nearly his entire life, knows his Dallas history intently, is conscientious as hell about his job, and resides not all that far from The 'Cliff, and travels 35E/S. RL Thornton Fwy and 67/MDL and I-20 regularly.

I just wanted to know if that was SOP or was it the reporters perference. I have heard Tammy Thomas say Oak Cliff plenty of times.
I have no problems with Doyle King. Some folk get offended by calling Oak Cliff South Dallas.

Nah, I understand. I didn't mean to sound terse about it. Unless Metro has an SOP, I think it's just the reporter's call. We were never chastised at Traffic.com unless we used obscure names (Angus G Wynne Fwy, Patriot Pkwy, etc) or didn't use the interstate designation along with the highway name. Now Clear Channel's traffic...that's another story. In some cities (not sure if DFW's included,) they actually peddle landmark "rights" to various businesses for their reports...like this: "Traffic filling in on NB 35E-Stemmons from the American Airlines Center up to about the Chase Bank Center on Mockingbird."

When I think and hear Oak Cliff, I think Jefferson Ave....not I-20.

That's Downtown Oak Cliff.

RFLMAO! Downtown Oak Cliff ....Ha! If I had had to say that in one of my reports on 'BAP,
I would have busted out laughing... "Yeah, where do you work" ..."Downtown Oak Cliff"
"Really?" "What do you do?"..."Sell crack on the corner"...:D

Such a callous response.

Wow, BigB, you don't know jack crap about Oak Cliff. No one sells crack on Jefferson street corners, they sell elotes, a delicious cream corn concoction.

If you want crack, you've got to go to 9th street.

And no, I-20 ain't the Cliff. I-20 is south Dallas.

I would dare say nothing south of 67 is Oak Cliff proper. You get South O and Glen Oaks down that way, but not true Oak Cliff.

Then what is TRUE Oak Cliff. For as long as I have lived in this area, Oak Cliff's southern border was I-20 except a little part that extends south on Hampton to just a bit north of Danieldale Road. I have known the Cliff to go as far west Loop 12/Spur 408/Mountain Creek area, to the east to about Pemberton Hill Road, to the north with I-30 and the Trinity River.

Thanks for the update. I'll remember that next time I'm in the market for a fix.
Guess they pushed most of that stuff south to Illinois and the Grove. A shame
because I hear of the old stories of how nice ALL those areas used to be. Many of
the old bungalows are still beautiful, but crime remains high. It's the old saying of
"you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's STILL a pig". My personal boundaries of "The
Cliff" in my reports on 'BAP were everything south of I-30, bounded by Hampton to
the West, Corinth/Lancaster to the East, and Camp Wisdom to the South.

And those elotes sound interesting. But not interesting enough for me to head to
the 'hood just for one. I'll pass... ;)

I seem to hear of MUCH more crime in N Dallas and Addison lately than the Winnetka Heights portion of Oak Cliff where those charming old bungalows are. People that refuse to venture into any part of Oak Cliff thinking they'll be shot are missing out. But if they're THAT ignorant, they probably think El Chico is good Mexican food.

I've lived in St. Louis two blocks from projects, so I'm familiar with how things
are. You're right, not THAT bad, but no use chancing things. Hmmm, Flower
Mound vs. East Dallas or Ledbetter at I-35?? ....I do believe I'll choose Flower
Mound.

Nah, I ain't like the dumb a** Texans that think good Italian food is Olive
Garden...(again, check St. Louis reference) but I also know I can get PLENTY
of good Mexican food up here on the north side, and family owned, without
going south. Plus, I'm not going 45 minutes or traveling to Oak Cliff for food
anyway. I like convenience.

Now, I'd travel 2 hours for Babe's chicken. And the 'Cliff ain't got it. So
there... ;D

And you wonder why some people say "Shut up and play the music."

I've heard of radio geeks, but two pages of comments about Oak Cliff is way beyond normal.
