Transitions between programs... WERS-FM Boston Emerson College Radio 88.9 MHz

while we are on the topic of WERS I think over the years ERS has lost the energy and creativity it onced had. Jack Casey has managed to turn it into Majic 106 with a AAA playlist

Don't be so quick to blame Jack Casey. Didn't I read somewhere that Emerson no longer has a broadcasting major? If the students aren't learning about what it takes to be a great announcer and about creative radio in the classroom, it's probably hard to take the time to teach them this while operating a largely student-run radio station.

WERS has turned into the biggest disappointment in the college radio world.

Once a powerhouse, Emerson has done away with it's radio major (which is a shame in itself) and made WERS a "club" that spends more time trying to raise money for itself than create creative and innovative programming. Every time I listen to WERS, I no longer hear the next generation of radio jocks, I hear barely trained students who can sort of front sell and backsell before throwing out a phone number to make a donation.

I think this is because fewer and fewer students are interested in radio broadcasting. There is a general apathy about radio these days, and fewer young people are interested in pursuing it as a career. (Can you blame them?)

You can't have a radio major, if there are no students interested in pursuing it.

I feel the exact opposite, whenever I tune into WERS I hear very capable (albeit plain vanilla) jocks. Gone are the days when you would hear student announcers who were, in effect, embarrassing the station. I have not heard an 'embarrassing' moment on WERS in a long time (I used to hear them regularly).

I think WERS sounds as good as WBOS or a number of area stations.

Now you may not like fundraising (does anyone like fundraising?). But that's the nature of the non-commercial beast.

I think Jack Casey is the best GM WERS have ever had, He has a ton of 'real world' radio experience, and is quite good with the students.

My only pet peeve? I used to tune into WERS for a little bit of a surprise factor. "I wonder what they are doing now?" Jazz, Show Tunes, Reggae, Soul..... The programming has kinda morphed into a plain vanilla format, and I am rarely surprised. But, hey, that's the current state of radio right now, isn't it?

All Aapella and Showtunes on Saturday is great!

How many of the previous WERS GM's are you familiar with. Is he better than Ted Phillips ?

Considering Casey replaced Fran Berger who had been GM for something like 20 years that is not saying much.

I think a major in radio at a 4 year College is a little ridiculious to begin with. You can teach students to be communicators without a 4 year radio major.

Now that the College no longer wants to financially support the staion I think at some point you see a professional doing afternoons.

I still contend that the station doesn't have the cutting edge sound it once had.

I am familiar with most of the history of WERS. Very familiar with Fran Berger. If I were a student there, I'd rather work/learn under Jack Casey than any other GM they've had.

Who said they don't want to support it?

None of radio does. ...and for numerous reasons (Pandora, PPM, just to name a couple...). WERS has to play in the same sandbox.

However, you haven't put much behind your "doesn't have the cutting edge sound" and/or "has lost the energy and creativity" claim....

But you are entitled to your opinion...

Thanks. This is all it is just my opinion. I am glad you like many others enjoy listening. I just think the station sounds overly programmed and that is not what I tune into College radio for.

It is a sad fact that as of 2017 WERS will have to rely soley on the income from contributions and corporate sponsorship, The Colllege will no longer provide funding. The days of students putting a ERS shift above all else are gone and they have considered paying to students to insure their participation. I would not be surprised if you see more non students/ professional air talent on ERS in the next 3 to 5 years

Actually, I don't enjoy it as much as I did, as I indicated in the comments below. I haven't listened to any radio I really enjoy lately.
