Translator Application Changed From WFAS AM to WPLJ

The application to move W232AL from Pomona NY to Westchester County, raise its power to 250 watts, and rebroadcast WFAS AM has been modified.
The owner filed an amendment to the original application. The request is now for an increase to 150 watts, and for the translator to remain in Pomona. The amendment indicates the translator would rebroadcast WPLJ. That may actually be its HD2 (currently a simulcast of the True Oldies Channel).
So apparently the plan to rebroadcast WFAS AM on a 250 watt translator has been scrapped.

Looks like the FCC approved the upgrade for 94.3 as there is now a CP to increase from 3 Watts to 150 Watts.....It's current signal doesn't even make it clearly to the NY Thruway which is only a few miles south but the new signal will pretty much cover all of Rockland and parts of Northern Bergen County in New Jersey. Right now in Southern Rockland & Northern Bergen, 94.3 is mostly a mix of WJLK, WWSK, W232AL and a whole bunch of pirates.

Now we wait to see how long the upgrade takes and what Cumulus will put on it.

As the FCC application stated the translator would rebroadcast WPLJ, and that station has no difficulty reaching Rockland County, I would expect that it will carry WPLJ HD2. Though the HD2 currently simulcasts Cumulus' True Oldies Channel, it is certainly possible that could change.
 
I would like for Cumulus to put a modern rock format on WPLJ HD2, and rebroadcast it on the Pomona 94.3 translator. That could generate some buzz if the signal is decent in most of Rockland Country.

I wonder why Cumulus changed the original translator application from 250 watts in Hartsdale (Westchester County), to 150 watts in less populated Rockland County. Perhaps Connoisseur Media, owner of WWSK on 94.3 indicated they would complain of interference?

Could there be an HD angle? If commuters from that area tend to commute by car (even though most commuters into NYC commute via public transportation) they could work a "switch to HD when you cross the Hudson and keep listening" angle. Scott may really want his oldies station to show up in the book.

Other than that, I dunno.

Between your posts it seems like you have the pieces that make sense to me if you put it together. What is filed now for retransmission for the CP is meaningless at the moment. It seems likely to me this new translator fills in a good deal of places 103.9 will leave behind at city grade coverage when it moves south, and (potentially) becomes something else. WPLJ-HD2 is basically the 'home' of the True Oldies Channel and not going anywhere. The currently unused WNSH-HD2 however is a different matter... You could see a new format in all 3 places, even the rumored rock. All very hypothetical, but plausible.
 
Why would Cumulus put rock on an HD2? There are already 2 rock stations on HD2, namely 104.3 HD2 and 92.3 HD2.
Pairing it up with 103.9 is an interesting idea, but is it legal? Can 94.3 translate analog 103.9 given the common Cumulus ownership?

To feed 94.3. The rest of what's going on elsewhere is irrelevant. HD subchannels inherently are irrelevant to the masses these days which is why they keep popping up on translators nationwide.

Yes it's legal, the ownership doesn't matter for fill in translators, Cumulus owns PLJ as currently filed too, right? What DOES matter is the contour fill-in rules. It's for this reason Cumulus probably can't relay 103.9 directly. They would have to use an HD2, hence where I started.
 
A great use for this Rockland County based translator would be if WRCR 1300 AM, Rockland's only English language radio station, had access to it for an FM simulcast. WRCR has a weak top of the AM dial signal, and should be easier to hear in much of Rockland, even on a 150 watt translator. Cumulus could get good publicity if they subleased it to them (via HD2) for a modest fee, as Rockland County would be better served as a result, especially during local emergencies
I believe that WRCR is still hoping to get permission to move to a less crowded frequency above 1600 AM.

That will surely remove whatever audience they have left. Nobody tunes above 1600. Rarely does anyone wander below 1010 in the NYC market, especially if English is your first language. Not a lot down there.

Really? Only 2 of the biggest AM's in the country (WCBS and WFAN) exist 'down there'. Nonsense.

Huh? 660, 710, 770, 880...what would they be tuning into above 1010?
 
I meant ABOVE 1010. Sorry, brain freeze. Was thinking in terms of ye olde analog tuner when things would be "down the dial".

You meant that nobody tunes below 297 meters in NY or below 187 meters in Rockland.
My favorite AM's are actually all those city hall stations down at the bottom of the band below 187m..
