TRANSLATORS

Keymarket seems to once again be operating their Froggy translator in the north hills on 99.3 with the tower in North Park. VERY low power, but on 99.3 you could probably upgrade to the "virtual class A" maximum for a translator (although it is pretty close to second-adjacent WSHH).

Whatever happened to the 97.7 licensed to West View? Radio-Locator shows a transmitter site near the old 13Q/WSHH building on Crane Ave.

The 97.7 translator hasn't been on for years (thank god) no pun intended. ::) It's not like we need another religious signal polluting the local airwaves. The transmitter for that translator was somewhere in the North Hills. I can tell you for a fact that it wasn't anywhere near Crane ave.

Interestingly, Radio-Locator shows a recently-issued CP for the translator to move from 97.7 to 97.9, again showing
Crane Avenue as the transmitter location.

Froggy on 99.3 is full of static a lot of the time. Its as if they are picking up the main Froggy OTA and can not receive a decent signal.

97.9 would probably be allowed to upgrade more, getting off of WLER's frequency.

Clear Channel has been ultra-aggressive in acquiring translators in some other markets, could this be the solution for them to get sports on FM?

The translator is shown as still licensed to Family Stations. The only recent application on file was for an extension of temporary authority to remain silent, which was dismissed by the commission.

99.3 W257CD is listed as being owned by Educational media Foundation and the primary is listed as 750W/925 ft WYRA 98.5 Confluence, PA... also an EMF station.

I don't ever recall 99.3 broadcasting a K-Love format. It's been on and off for the past several years, but always has been Froggy. It is so low powered, I don't know why they bother with it. Especially, like I said before, when sometimes it's almost complete static.

It was rebroadcasting Froggy last week.

Froggy picked up translators 99.3 and 105.5 in the LMA deal for their 98.3 station. Education Media Foundation still owns them but there is a good chance Froggy will get them to keep should EMF purchase 98.3. Froggy doesn't need the translators but they have them so other stations don't get them. It is the same thinking that caused them to turn off their AMs. Both actions reduces competition in the market place. It might not be fair but is legal and might even be good business.

I wonder how/what feeds this translator then.

I would guess that most translators today are fed via STL or audio over IP. They would be way too easy for someone with a low power FM transmitter to highjack if they were fed off air.

Point made, but in some cases, it's not legal.. like in this case.. a commercial station feeding a commercial band translator must be fed over the air.

Out in the midwest, there are quite a few translator 'daisy chains".. one translator feeding another.. feeding another.. feeding another......and some of the incoming signal levels are poor and easy to over ride.

Must be getting some coaching from Clear Channel, where revenue is objective #1, and limiting competition is objective #1A

Commercial translators of a FM or FM HD signal must get their audio from off air unless you can show "white noise":

http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/fm-translators-and-boosters-general-information#NONFILLIN

The translators for AM stations can be feed by a typical STL, but if the AM primary signal is off more than 24 hour the translator has to go off too. The non commercials can use just about any way to feed a translator. .

I am sure someone on this board has done this and their practical knowledge should be better. I have been out of the business for a decade now.
