Transmitter failure at KTTU

This past week, I had noticed that KTTU's status in the FCC database had changed from "Licensed" to "Licensed and Silent", but couldn't find any record of a filing with the FCC. I was in Tucson last night, so was able to confirm that the station's analog signal was off, but the digital signal was OK.

I found an article on the KMSB website that explains what happened. Depending on the damage, KTTU may have already made its digital TV transition.

Dave,

That sounds correct. I knew that KTTU was about to make the switch early.
I didn't think it would be until December 1.

They've had a digital signal for some time, and had planned to keep the analog signal right up until 2/17, according to their filing with the FCC. However, when equipment fails, and it costs tens of thousands of dollars to resurrect it, it doesn't make sense to blow that kind of coin on a signal that's going away permanently in five months anyway.

Apparently, the problem wasn't too expensive - KTTU's analog signal is back.

Thank goodness for those Ace Hardware replacement AC plugs and the repair schematics. ;D

...too bad those Ace Hardware doo-dads aren't keeping KTTU from showing the 2005 version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 4:3 on their digital signal at the moment; the film's actual aspect ratio is 2.35:1...

Turns out, the problem was a fire at the analog transmission facility. The station has applied to operate at 53% power until shut-off.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, in Ultimajock's case, the DTV facilities are at another location, so they were not affected, and KTTU is using their pre-transition facilities for post-transition use, so there will be no further effect.
