Transmitter sites

Does any body know if any of the Atlanta TV stations have back up transmitters or even a back up tower? IIRC some of the NYC TV stations were off the air for days if not weeks after 9 11. Also are any of these site's "manned" (sorry to use an out of date term)? I know people are expensive but the loss of revenue could be more expensive. Especially during the 6PM news cast.

When WTBS/WPCH had their main tower and transmitter in Midtown (now gone,) they had a backup transmitter in the Briarcliff Tower site area. Not sure what stick it was on though.

Can any confirm this rumor: That when WTBS and "TBS Superstation" was still around... that if WTBS went off the air (ie transmitter maintenance/problems) "TBS Superstation" had to sign off the air too... even though they were in separate master control rooms? If it's true, maybe that's why WTBS did have a backup.

The "TBS signoff" story is true, I believe, but only based on regulations that have been gone for years. Back in the days when WTBS was genuinely a "superstation" (the local Atlanta feed went up on satellite), they did indeed have to shut the bird feed down if the OTA transmitter went off. Once "Superstation TBS" became a separate cable feed, what happened in Atlanta stayed in Atlanta.

There are not, AFAIK, any full backup transmitter sites for TV in Atlanta (I know of at least one for FM - WSTR), but there are backup transmitters. Many modern transmitters are internally redundant - you can lose one amplifier cabinet and keep going at slightly reduced power.
