Trapper Jack Leaves WDOK

Too bad. He is a class act. Seems like a cost cutting move by CBS. They also let Jim McIntyre go as well. We shall wait and see who will replace them. Although of the group that was on the air there I would have rather seen Toohey be let go. Nothing against her personally just don't like her on air in the morning.

Sad to see them go. I've listened to Trapper since he had the free money giveaways on Lite Rock 106 1/2. Jim McIntyre was great too. This really makes me wonder the future of WDOK after the Christmas music ends...another move to sound even more like Q104 or a syndicated morning show as opposed to a local one or just different people with Jen and whoever else CBS brings in?

You click on that page, and it says "page no longer exists".

The Soviet style purge has begun.

It's also possible that DOK may just do a "more music mornings" deal with just Jen Toohey at the helm. Kind of a counter balance to Q 104's busy morning show with Alan Fee and the gang.

You want music, go to 102...you want standard morning show fare, go to 104.

Real classy of WDOK to purge his goodbye about two minutes after he left the air. Who says Clear Channel is the only company that has no class? Stay classy CBS!

At least CBS gave them a farewell. Not the nicest thing ever to purge his goodbye after only a few minutes on the site, but at least he got to say goodbye. Unlike many at CC who got canned recently.

Such a shame to see Trapper Jack and Jim gone from WDOK. They were a key part of the station's success.

The only longtime on-air jocks left on the station are Desiray Cross (formerly McCray) and Bob McKay. Talk about a slow purge of 'DOK.

I wonder if Allan Fee and some of his co-hosts might move over to join Jenn Toohey at 102 and 104 gets a brand new morning show. That might be an option.

It seems talk radio is the only place for very much live/local (or live/network) personality these days, huh?

Who said trapper was being replaced by syndication?

I think the fact Jen Toohey is sticking around kinda cinches that 102 will be live and local in the morning.

The question is whether or not is becomes a more music oriented show (maybe a female oriented version of what Slats does on WNCX), or does JT get some sidekicks.

I'm not in their target demo, so I don't listen to 102, but when he filled in at times, how did Mark Zinni gel with Jen? With media folks, although mainly on the sports side, routinely taking double duty, I wouldn't be surprised if the weekend morning anchor would have an interest in a gig like this... Pure speculation, of course.

Doesn't it make sense if a radio station, or any business makes major changes that sort of defies logic...that indicates something isn't going well?

Perhaps WDOK locally, or radio group operators all over the country are having serious ratings or revenue problems, and they're searching for ways to fix the situation.

Radio industry executives keep publically claiming how healthy the industry is.

Yet, if you privately speak to any veteran on-air, sales person, even those in management positions...including those supposedly securely employed...they express great concern with the over all long-term health of radio.

I should add that WDOK has not been the same ever since they became "The New 102." A lot of longtime staffers have left, and it seems like the station is getting younger and younger. I wouldn't be surprised if more people from Q104 move over to 102. The music seems to almost reflect 104's playlist anyway (when its not Christmas). Thankfully, there are still some older tunes to set them apart.

To me, Trapper and Jim's departure from 'DOK are the final nails in the station's coffin. The first was when Nancy Alden left, though the slow demise of the station as a lot of longtime listeners from 1987 to 2011 started when a lot of longtime veterans, whether at 102 or elsewhere in Cleveland, left the station starting in 2007.

For seven solid years (2000-07), they had a stable weekday lineup with Trapper, Jim and Robin Benzle on mornings, Nancy on middays, Chris Fox on afternoons, "Delilah" in the evening and John Elmo overnights. That all feel apart when Chris left, and that was when the wheel of instability started.

2007 - Chris leaves and is replaced by Dan Deely after a lengthy search. Shortly thereafter, Robin is gone.

2008 - Terry Moir is hired as the new AM co-host. PD Scott Miller is out and replaced by Q104 PD Dave Popovich. Later during the holidays, Dan is out after over a year in afternoons though moves to a voicetracked Sunday afternoon shift. Nancy replaces him, with Desiray McCray promoted to middays, though voicetracking the shift.

2009 - Nancy and Desiray switch shifts - with the former returning to middays and the latter now live on afternoons.

2010 and 2011 - weekday line-up remains stable following the '09 midday/afternoon switch.

2012 - Nancy is out at the beginning of the year, "Delilah" was dropped, and Terry leaves. Jen Toohey moves from Q104 to join Trapper and Jim for a revamped morning show, and the station becomes "The New 102." Kory and Liz Leonard soon join for middays and nights respectively. Jaci Fox later succeeds Liz earlier in the fall. Now, Trapper has left with Jim leaving soon.

2013 - Stay tuned I guess...

It will be interesting to see who replaces Trapper and Jim and what direction the station goes in.

Is there a format change in the future? Did they realize the current "new" style is not working for its older audience who they left out in the cold and clealy need them back to survive? Just an observation.

If WDOK was worried about older listeners, they wouldn't have let Trapper walk to start with.

They want to get younger...a couple of clicks behind Q 104's demo so there's some seperation between the two, but still be within range of certain target demos.

As stations in many formats attempt to "young-up" their core demos....I ask: how young is it feasible to get before you start targeting age groups who've never been especially heavy radio listeners?

When did people (primarily folks under age 25?) start getting their music from on-line sources like Napster and other file-sharing sites? Was it the late 1990's?

I.E.: a 15-year-old file-sharing person in 1998 is age 29 in 2012. If he/she didn't listen to radio that much in 1998, what do you think the odds are he/she listens much more to radio at age 29 this year?

Don't have any clue how wide-spread on-line file-sharing was back then or has been since then (or trading tunes with friends, I-Tunes, etc.).

I do have several friends in their 40's and 50's who have adult "children" in their 20's...and they rarely listen to radio. Again, have no clue how representative that is in our society in general.

My point: if folks under age 30 are heavy NON-radio listeners....it's easy to project a cloudy future for radio....don't you think?
