Traveling cross-country- station suggestions?

I'll be going from San Francisco to upstate NY later this week, by car. Cities along the way include Salt Lake City, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, and Cleveland, and I'll be passing through other areas as well, of course. Xan anyone make any suggestions as to radio stations that are worth listening to? I'm not picky about music genre- I just want to hear the best stations, period.

It really is a vast wasteland out there. In 07, spent a couple of weeks in rural Utah (Bryce, Zion, etc) and northern Arizona down to the Grand Canyon. Most of the stations were new Country music - all voice-tracked - the only local content were the bumpers going into the commercials.

Try to avoid the seek/scan feature in remote ares and find stations by manually tuning the stations. Low tech but sometimes effective.
