I had the pleasure of visiting beautiful Traverse City last summer, and I tried to DX WIXX/Green Bay. I had no luck. Good catch.

Traverse City is one of the worst DXing spots in northern Michigan with all the stations spilling over onto adjacent frequencies and surrounded by big hills on three sides (the other side is Grand Traverse Bay, which feeds into Lake Michigan)

98.9 – WKLZ Petoskey, MI is a regular visitor on the far east side of Indianapolis, IN, 400 miles away.
Not a rare station there either. I used a JVC tuner, a 40 foot tower, a 10 element beam, and rotor.

They're 100kW from the top of a ski hill. Have you ever gotten WTCM (103.5) in Indy? They're 100kW from the top of a plateau (their HAAT is around 1,000 ft above sea level)

Before all the frequency duplications, I used to get WMBI-FM 90.1 Chicago, WFMR 96.5 Milwaukee, WLPX 97.3 Milwaukee, WJML-FM 98.9 Petoskey, WBRN-FM 100.9 Big Rapids, and WIXX 101.1 Green Bay on a regular basis from a location of about 43.00 N and 83.70 W. I could get WJML-FM 98.9 Petoskey from 42.65 N and 83.00 W. All these were using an Antennacraft FM-10 antenna with a rotator at a height of about 30 feet. I used to hear WMBI-FM on a Sony Portable from the early 1970s with just the telescoping whip antenna on a regular basis. At the first location, I could get both the Traverse City and Detroit area duplicates on a fairly regular basis with the FM-10. These were mostly in the 1980s and 1990s as evidenced by the old call letters.

WJML-FM, now WKLZ-FM, actually has its transmitter in an area called Emmet Heights, just north of Boyne Highlands. When it was off the air for an extended period, you could hear the oscillator if you drove up close to the antenna on some of the back roads leading up the hill near the tower.

If you are tower hunting, access to Emmet Heights is sandy two tracks that often wash out. You may even encounter a section of road that is covered with 6 inches of water in tire tracks on the way up. I wouldn't attempt to try to go up near there without a four wheel drive, and the same goes to any similar site in Michigan on sandy hills where there is a steep grade and two tracks. The places I went were developed roads in subdivisions that went near the top, just close enough to hear the oscillator. Make sure you are healthy before trekking up there on foot.

Speaking of tower hunting, the WKLA-FM/WKZC tower is a challenge to get to. First you have to drive between people's yards for about 100 yards, and then you have to make a left turn between bushes to get to the tower itself. The tower is visible from Ehler Road, which is paved.
