Trend One: The Real Story

This board never ceases to amuse those of us in the sales world. A single trend, unweighted, causes such a stir. The rumors of format flips are always a joy to behold. The real story behind this trend is the emergence of KZOK as the number one station in Seattle. It continues to grow 25-54 book to book and four book to four book.

The Country battle remains a dead heat. KKWF took this month, they tied last month, KMPS took the month before that. KRWM is suffering its usual decline from the Christmas numbers fading. Mariners are helping KOMO.

It is pretty much the usual suspects in the usual places and once the weighting is added in, you will see very little demo change except KZOK is the dominant Seattle station. No one will change format based on a trend. I have noticed a couple of station making adjustments but no format flips. Isn't summer the typical time stations flip anyway?

"Isn't summer the typical time stations flip anyway?".....

Do I suspect sarcasm or a hint of something he knows and is not telling?

Again DJdan makes excuses for Star being a bottom dweller overall...no surprise there...yes he didn't mention KPLZ, but we all know he was talking about the "Star Flip."

Star, The End and Kiss are over and it is obvious whether the suits at KPLZ realize it or not.

Selling caskets may earn you money, but it sure is dreadful and deals with dead people. The Sales at KPLZ make money, yet deal with a station that is "dead" in the ratings.

I don't make excuses for anyone, just try to point out the facts from an point of view of a rep firm that deals primarily with agencies. I check in on threads from time to time, usually after a trend is out. I have been supportive of stations like KPLZ, KIRO, KMPS, KZOK and KMTT over the years because they are heritage stations that continue to perform well in sales and specific key demos and don't react every time they have a couple of down books or the market shifts. If I had a dollar for every time this board said Kent and Alan, Rivers, Ichabod and KIRO Mornings were retiring, I'd be rich.

Though you were mocking me redbull you do bring up something I didn't think about. Maybe sales people should get more credit for success at radio stations! Ratings seem less and less a factor in station success. This is not an excuse for bad ratings, just an observation. KIRO is once again the number one biller in town, but their ratings are declining. The last few trends had them at a 2.5 share 25-54. KPLZ's ratings hover around a 3 share 25-54 persons yet have moved up to sixth in billing. KBSG is back in the top ten with a 2.5 average 25-54 and KBKS has moved up to number seven with a sub-two share average. All these stations are declining in ratings over the past few months yet are billing more than ever. I can point out a few stations that have pretty nice increases in numbers and not much revenue to show for it.

Ya ya (to quote mkb) Maybe sales is really the key to success. Why do we need programmers or air-talent, if we have great sales people that can sell caskets and advertisers love it? Why even turn on transmitters. I'm am liking this board more and more.

Sales people the key to radio bruahaaahaahaaaa haaaa. That's a good one.
KIRO number one in billing. bruahhahahhhaaaaahaaa. That's a crime
KPLZ moving up in billing. bruahhhahaahaahaaahaa. That's a crime
KBSG moving up in billing. bruhaaahaaahahaaaahaa. That's a crime.
KBKS moving up in billing. bruhahhhahaaahahaaahaa That's the biggest crime.

Ratings = Revenue.
Revenue = Ratings. Bruhhaaahaaaahhaaa haaa

This board is killin me.

I would like to know how KDDS FM and KKMO AM do, 12+ (M-Sun 6a-12m) month to month for the Winter Book '07.

Are you asking for the Winter numbers? 1.6 and 0.6 respectively

Are you asking for the individual four-week extrapolations within the Winter book? I'm pretty sure we're not allowed to put those numbers on this message board.

Or are you asking for something else altogether? (I may have misunderstood your request. Sorry.)

Jay

KDDS had a huge drop in the trend and KKMO didn't increase its ratings, where are all those Latino listeners going? Any idea.
KUBE has a huge latino audience
KZOK has latinos listening
WOLF and KMPS too, what about the rest?

Any idea?

Hey djdan how about trying to actually sell Movin', Fitz, KZOK and others. Does it ever occur to you that when Gary Crow opens up the mike and sells Classic Rock on KZOK that he's done far more than you'll ever do in "selling" product. Go put your shoes on the pavement pal.

A big kiss to slickkicker! There is a reason DJDan is in sales. He knows nothing about programming. It is a crime that sales people live in the past. The future in Seattle radio is MOVIN, WOLF, JACK. KZOK is the last reminder of the past heritage stations that do well. KMPS is over KBKS is over STAR already changing, KBSG already changing. KIRO is not even a player nor really are any AM stations. Sales just takes longer to catch up to what is really happenning. Go back to sales and get off this board Dan. Your comments are no longer valid and are sorta irrelevent Go Slickkicker!!! Ya ya Good!

I reiterated a remark from about fifteen years ago. Our programming people had delivered significant ratings growth over a period of three or four books in a large, east coast, market. The sales team had started to reap the rewards.

At a party to celebrate both sales and ratings accomplishments the local Sales Manager, in front of all of the major principles, looked at me and stated " So what did you do to sell W--- today". Without a pregnant pause I responded that "I sold W--- and Classic Rock". There was some nervous laughter until my OM, who was sitting right next to me, chimed in and said good response.

I've been in sales and it ain't easy, especially in smaller towns where you can't sit around and wait for the phone to ring. And yet it's significantly more difficult to open up a mike and have the gonads to lay yourself out in front of hundreds of thousands listeners. To be able to be a personality, especially in a large, competitive, market, is an accomplishment that some reps fail to appreciate.

I agree 100%. I find it sad that this board tends to trash the talent who have managed to survive a couple of decades. It takes major gonads to put yourself out there and survive for years. At the same time this board is very hard on new talent, like those at KQMV and KKWF.

Sales types are the first to say someone is washed up, I thought programming types would be kinder. I am actually a fan of radio, but suck on the air, which is why I got into sales. My point is that this business rarely gives people the two to three years to deliver solid numbers and is too quick to change. There is also a sad trend of getting rid of established talent after a few bad books. It has been my experience that fans tend to return to their core stations after checking out a new format. If over a period of 4-6 ratings books (NOT TRENDS) talent is not working out, then make the change.

I end up defending established stations, and established market talent because they tend to rebound here more than in other markets I rep. Maybe the Northwest is less comfortable with change.

Surviving a couple of decades, or beyond, is debatable. WCBS-FM and WNEW-FM in New York are nearly perfect examples of stations, along with there personalities, who overstayed there welcome.

This market has plenty of examples of companies, talents and stations that are now, or soon will be, overstaying there welcome. And yet there's some that have recently made significant inroads. About five or six months after Fitz landed at KKWF-FM the guy at my local 7-11 not only had the show blasting but pointed out some bit they were doing. Being astute I made a note of this observation and since havn't been surprised that the Wolf and Fitz are still on the air. And I really don't know blank about country.

Here's an example in the opposite vein. Bill Yeend and KOMO-AM are now on one of my three or four top pre-sets. Mr. Yeend will retire soon but Fisher got the Mariners and Yeend while switching to 24/7 news. Yeend has been around forever yet KOMO-AM has gone from a moribund, sleepy and moldy talker to being a pretty good news and info outlet.

And meanwhile Robin and Maynard are still looking for a gig.

Yes I am asking for the extrapolations....so if someone could work them out and just say if KKMO actually had that much better month or just that the KDDS numbers left....The comment about KUBE reminded me...what was the percentage of the Hispanics in the 18-34 demo of the station in the last book....I am thinking it will depend on that number and where the books landed and I am thinking that may answer my question....
