So how does B-97.3 justify being 18th? By playing more Sister Sledge?
What does Big Momma and Movin say about being 17th? Let me guess...wrong demo, bad sampling, skewed torwards men. I think that Movin's trend is Ya Ya accurate. ;) The Mountain's #'s came back down to reality too. They sure had a spike last trend (book).

No, the B is coping by playing Busta Rhymes. Yep, this morning at 6:11. Normally, I might doubt the Yes.com playlist, but given all the wacky stuff they've been playing lately, it's probably right. Given their years of bad ratings, they should have changed their name to "F." There's a grade that's more appropriate.

As for Mama, I'm sure MOViN is actually #1. And #2. And #3. The ratings in this post are just more propeganda from the male dominated yadda yadda yadda. I'm sure it couldn't be because of the playlist. Or is it that even Sir Mix-A-Lot never wants to hear Baby Got Back again.

And what's up with the Wolf? Looks like it stepped in a bear trap.

Oh, sheesh. What else is new. Radio is bought and programmed for advertisers to reach narrow, targeted audiences. So what is the meaning of this horse race? If you're buying teens and young adults, then you go for KUBE, KBKS and KNDD. If you're wanting females 45-64 for that direct account furniture store, you'll buy KBSG, KRWM and maybe KPLZ & KCMS.

This only tells me that the baby boomers are in control in this market. Tell me something I don't know.

The early numbers are the rolling trend. The actual month saw huge shifts with KUBE roaring back, KBKS falling off. KMTT lost its spike, KBSG, WOLF and MOVIN continue to collapse. For the month your top ten winners in the key demo, in no particular order, are: KISW, KMPS, KRWM, KUBE, KIRO, KJR-FM, KPLZ, KCMS, JACK, KOMO.

Each month the arbitron is getting more unstable and now the PPM is on hold. Makes the four book even more important and single books pretty worthless. A single trend is worthless.

ya ya. It is only a trend so stop the man-chest pounding. Do you really think KUBE got 5 times the
18-34 it had last month. Mamma is laughing.

Yo Big Mamma. I don't have a man chest and I'm delighted that the trend has left you so speachless.
No matter what, it's gonna be hard to recover from such a crappy month.
A month that goes into the book, the fall book no less.
Ya Ya Yikes Mamma!

The B has got to be planning another round of changes. Fastlane's headed south of the border. He's now 20th -- tied with La Mas Mexicana KDDS. Or with the smell of stale tacos drifting across the street, maybe they don't think that's a problem.

What they need is more energy in the morning, and rumor has it they have the perfect talent already in the building. Stitch is angling for the morning shift and certainly sounds more awake than Fastlane aka Scott aka Pollo Fundido en Mole.

And those of us whose paychecks actually come from broadcasting companies are also laughing - at your posts. Thanks for the amusement!

All this talk on the trend has got me thinking about some things. Allow me to school you on things that WILL happen.

So Yesterday I am roaming around the Bonneville hallways smelling the sterile air, glancing at the generic artwork that is supposed to create an inspiring radio environment. Listening to engineers explain why they can’t speed up the music any faster without making it sound "chipmunkish". Then all of the sudden I hear the sound of clapping coming from an office at the end of the hall. I rush over to see what good has come from the 18th ranking slot the mighty B has received. As I round the corner I see only two men clapping. One of the two men shall remain nameless. The other was Mr. Scott "fastlane" Phillips. I asked "what’s with all the excitement?" and then the master plan was revealed..........

Scott Phillips, a man who loves a challenge explained this to me........

We are currently in 18th place. At the first of the year I will become your leader. I will not only hold the position of PD but I will also be the MD. When I take over I look forward to the challenge of taking this beast back to where she belongs. I will leave the rest of our conversation personal.

Do I think he can make this happen? NO. Sit back and watch folks. The first of the year WILL bring some huge B97.3 changes.

The Seattle board gets more excitement out of a single trend than any thread in the country on radio-info. I find it quite amusing. In the case of KBSG and KBKS it is much too soon to see if changes implemented are even working. For KBSG, their PD completed his changes in phase two of the trend, changing music and pulling back the morning show to a sustainable sound in the Classic Hits parameter. Personalities are adapting quite well, in my opinion, to a music based Classic Hits approach. Let's see what the rest of the book and Winter book brings. Same can be said for KBKS. Music changes were completed in September with one up trend and one down, the rolling average is sustainable, even quite good. Personalities are still a work in progress, but are adapting slowly. Change takes time, six months to a year. KBSG and KBKS management brought in new Programmers in August, let's give them more than three months before pronouncing a format dead or alive. I have it on good authority that both the PD's of KBKS and KBSG have long term contracts and will be given the time needed to make their formats work. I would predict solid second and third trends for both of these stations and a very strong Winter book. There are some fairly important developments over the last three or four trends that can be tracked. KMPS is clearly distancing itself from the WOLF. MOVIN has only had one good trend in the last six. This follows the trend parameter for the MOVIN format nationally. Infinity is in a bit of a quandry regarding JACK. If JACK does well it hurts KZOK. If KZOK does well it hurts JACK. This will take time to sort out, but I have it on good authority that JACK will not be changing format, despite rumors to that effect.

I have participated in the actual process of filling out a paper diary (that counted in a trend) and I can tell you it's a pretty damn unreliable document- almost impossible to fill out accurately and I actually was paying attention. And according to the Arbitron folks themselves, you need a minimum of at least a three book average before the data has any relationship to reality. In the Seattle television world, we're just starting to see the differences between LPM and "old world" reporting (there is one ratings period, October, plus some data back to July that is unofficial). The interesting takeaway there is that were lots of predictions as to what would happen based on other markets (Seattle was like market 10) some of what was predicted is happening, but most of it isn't. Bottom line, LPM should be an improvement, but anything less than three ofrfour books, forget trends, is conjecture.

The Top three are actually pretty boring. I'd buy that wacko liberal station on the AM dial. Maybe sports on KJR too. And if someone doesn't put an Oldies jukebox on 1150-AM then they're nuts.

My sense is that the wild swings in the past few monthlies indicate Arbitron is doing a very uneven job getting a balanced sample. Perhaps distracted by the PPM rollout, more than they are usuallly that is.

I'll spell it out. WLNG. It's a station out on Long Island that's been around forever and makes money. If some of the locals here can't fill the void with some of there dead AM's then give me a call. 97.3 just left a huge hole. Doo-Wop could make some scratch before KIXI-AM claims it.

Then of course Salem and Bonneville are in the market now.
