You are correct to a considerable extent.
Q101 still plays artists like RATM, Disturbed, and SOAD, but in much smaller quantities than 12 months back. Their jocks did make some on-air overtures to ex-Zone listeners when The Zone bit the dust.
With that said, artists like Duran Duran, The Police, and Jack Johnson are MAJOR turn-offs to ex-Zone listeners. I agree that Q101's main concern, especially these days, are stations such as The Mix and 'XRT.
With that said, if they had no interest at all in the Male 18 -34 demo, they wouldn't still be running Mancow now, would they?
I bet there's hardly any recycling going on from Mancow's show into the other dayparts. Mancow and Q101's music format are terrible mismatches. So, the battles with Mix, XRT, etc. are battles Q101 will probably not win.
I've said it many months ago and I'll say it again -- Mancow should've moved to WLUP, and WLUP should've adopted a WRIF-like or even KSHE-like sound.
The Loop seemed to be heading in a KSHE-like direction, but in recent months has backed off of that approach (probably when the decision was made to lure Johnny B back). KSHE is now a bit more adventurous on newer music than The Loop.
