Trends: KDKB - Ouch!

It looks like KDKB may have gotten its lowest 12+ ratings in its nearly 35-year history this trend, and is in danger of being the first full-powered South Mountain FM station to fall below a 2 share in 10 years. It looks like Tim & Mark were carrying their ratings all along (I'd like to see how KZON fares early next year without Howard Stern's boost). Can the station be saved? Could they move it toward its "progressive" roots with an AAA format and see a ratings increase? Comments/suggestions, anyone.

I think T&M was KDKB's life support.

Sandusky's operations in Phoenix are like a company owning 3 mexican food restaruants in the same mall and saying "yeah, but they all serve a different clientele". One used to have good breakfast, but the breakfast menu changed and now nobody eats there any more. One serves classic Mexican dishes, but is now rather bland. They're trying to make it into a Mexican-Food/Sports bar on the weekends, but they stop serving foood and are using 19" black and white TV's. The other one serves really hot Mexican food and lots of cheap beer & tequila. The cheap beer and tequila keeps the 18-34 men coming. Even though 2 out of the 3 properties are losing customers faster than Robosaurus can crush an Oldsmobile, they're going to ride this avalanche because "We feel that we know Mexican food and nobody does it better than us." Don't forget, they also have a little mobile taco stand. But it doesn't go past Baseline after dark and it's not big enough to ever make a good taco stand/sports bar. It was pretty good back in the 80's when it served soul food.

The cannibals are eating each other.

Unfortunately, noone wants to open a better mexican restaurant in the same mall, so the public loses.

Sandusky should research the market and find a new format for KDKB. Most of the displaced KDKB listeners would go straight to sister KSLX, especialy if they tweaked the music a little harder. KSLX would then become a powerhouse in 25-54 males (especially 35-54). If they picked the right format for KDKB they could turn that station into a success too while hurting some non-Sandusky stations in the process.

Many other companies would do exactly that. Most companies disfavor overlap. But Sandusky seems comfortable with the wall of rock strategy no matter how low the numbers get.

Right on Mr. Carlson. That's about the nuts and bolts of the situation. Somebody needs to point out that they are operating under an illusion. The funny thing is, no matter what anybody tells them, they continue to operate in the same fashion. Talk about "Head in the Sand!"

I think Chuck Artigue was the captain of the Titanic in another life. Full steam ahead! Icebergs schmicebergs!

The ghost of Bill Compton should be rampaging over there on Javelina.

Sandusky does have rock solid talent like Pete Cummings & Ruby Cheeks (what a skanky alias). Who has the moxy to go against legendary talent like that?

Next year when it happens to KZON, Infinity will do something about it. That is, unless it's Bonneville by then in which case Stern will have already departed.

I almost forgot...maybe it's time for "CHILL". Now that that's out of the way...

I wonder if there would be a "WCBS-FM/WNEW/WHFS/KLOL Effect" by flipping a 35-year heritage station to a different format, despite its current low ratings, and have a lot of listener protest? What formats do they have to choose from? AAA (they could do this and make KSLX sound a little harder in the process)? Soft AC (Sandusky has a station with this format in Seattle)? Something else (please don't say "Chill," and unfortunately Phoenix doesn't have the enough of the target demos for an Urban AC on a big stick)?

Infinity will have a problem. The "Jack FM" format is already taken by The Peak. What else could they try?

Bonneville, on the other hand....

Bring back KUKQ! Oops! Wrong Gumpdusky station. :-D

But somebody had to say it.

They could, like you know, totally corner 18-34 listeners (I'm not talking demographics) with a nice mix of urban from when it was (BLEEP) Q (ironic call letters), Jonathan L's alternative, Q Country - plus CHILL and Dance. What an idea! If they wanted to boost the ratings and revenue, they could still do sports and broadcast ASU women's lacrosse and golf play by play. And if the KUKQ call letter weren't available, how about KUPU? Close to KUPD and KUKQ and sums up Sandusky's broadcasting strategy.

Call Chuck Artigue (480) 897-9300. A little "CHILL" might just make the Titanic's iceberg bigger...make the Titanic sink faster.

Ok lets think about the choices:

Could do a "Jill"format - Everything we want but targeted to women and not men

Classic Dance format - Right along the lines of Jack but dance from 70's-90's

AAA - I would mirror it against someone like KBCO in Denver

Hot Talk - I would do a mixture of syndicated and lcoal talk or even go in the Spike Radio format and do a mixture of guy talk and sports

Urban or Urban AC - Could use some of the syndicated offerings like Joyner or Wendy Williams - Unlike what many people think, Urban audience is more than just black folks

I myself would like to see an Urban AC formatted station back on the Phoenix airwaves, and I do believe there is an audience for the format other than the African-American population (remember KISO's numbers for being an AM station with no promotion, and the appearance of UAC crossover songs on KYOT). However, radio is a business and advertiser/agency stereotypes of the format won't disappear overnight (at least for it to be profitable on a 100kW South Mountain stick).

Hmmmmm.....what would Bonneville do with Sandusky....

-Donate 1440 AM to someone/anyone - SCC?
-Sign on with ESPN Deportes Radio to broadcast on 1060 when the network gets up and running in August (keeps the ESPN franchise in the family)
-take the current KDKB Format out back of the broadcast shed and put it down.
93.3fm becomes KTAR FM...simulcast KTAR and split the FM off to PBP as needed. Helps maintain the news product and gives the Suns and D-Backs the FM signal they have so wanted since the Cards went over to the Eagle in 1996.( KMVP remains the secondary backup to pick up pbp when there is a triple conflict.)
- Refine KUPD back to its roots...agressive and loud, new rock.
- KSLX remains as "Classic Rock"

The only fly might be Bonneville's corporate ethos not feeling comfortable with the KYPD format (one of the reasons they gave for moving the LOOP98/Chicago to Emmis for the three Phx properties)

Any more conspiracy theories?

BRING BACK THE MAJIK 107 FORMAT .

HOWEVER, SANDUSKY IS NOT THE OUTFIT TO DO IT .

> AMEN!! I cant understand why those in the know cant see this. Hip hop/rap cuts across the racial lines, so does urban ac-- who that is white hasnt listened to Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Boys II Men, Usher, and other black artists that are not rap. You have 4% of the Phx market as black, yet many many others(Latino, white and Asian) listen to urban ac artists. This silly notion that it appeals only to black audiences is getting very old!
Edited by AZJoe on 06/30/05 07:41 AM.
