Trends... Possible changes in Tampa Bay?

Just curious how some of you might read into the latest trends (and I'm not talking 12+). Looks like we'll have to wait another period or two before we start to see the effects of US103 on WQYK, WHPT, WXGL, WRBQ, Outlaw, and to some extent 98Rock. I find it interesting how one station's format flip could essentially affect the numbers on so many others. One thing that hasn't been floated out there recently on this board is 101.5 The Point. We all know about the national rollout of the "Jack" format by Infinity. The question that continues to linger in my mind is if The Point is gonna make the same mistake Beasley's 80's station, KSTJ (Star 102.7) in Las Vegas made and that's let Infinity bury them by flipping Outlaw or evolving Q-105 to Jack's music. Seems to me by the looks of the latest numbers that The Point is not only one of the last remaining "80's and more" stations in the country, but it's numbers continue to trend down. It also is becoming one of the most boring stations in Tampa Bay... and that's saying a lot with Magic 94.9 reading the same liner cards every hour. Thoughts?

Given the events of June 3, I would think that any Infinity oldies station in a Jack-less market is fair game for the switch.

The New Magic 94.9 was voted your #1 listen at work station...The New Magic 94.9 was voted your #1 listen at work station....Why do you think the New Magic 94.9, which was voted #1 for listening at work...says the same liner cards over and over? Why do you think hearing the same liner cards hour after hour is boring? ;)

If I was you, I would want Cox to make the same mistake KSTJ in Las Vegas. While it makes perfect sense for Cox to flip 101.5 to a jack type station, they would have an awful version I think. While jacks are mostly jockless (which 101.5 basically is already), they do update there liners on a almost daily basis. 101.5 still has the same liners as it did when it started, included "the new" part. Cox just is too cheap, and 1 cox jack would sound completly boring.

> If I was you, I would want Cox to make the same mistake KSTJ in Las Vegas.

Keep in mind that when Bob FM was tried in Honolulu (the very first Variety Hits station brought in from Canada), that market had an 80s station -- and Bob FM did not work in Honolulu. I think that experience played at least some role in scaring the format away (so far) from markets like Houston, Jacksonville, Tampa, etc. where Cox has existing 80s stations. We'll see how well JACK-FM does in Las Vegas (going up against 80s KSTJ), as Jack just launched there one week ago...
______________

What I find most annoying about the Jack format is the lack of jocks. Until now, it seemed you at least could count on Infinity to be live. Appearantly if they can jettison Cousin Brucie at WCBS, nobody is sacred. If they Jack WRBQ, I would miss Marvelous Marv. When he gives the weather and says "up and down the Gulf beaches", it takes me back to WOND in 1962 Atlantic City. If WRBQ, went jockless, it would be a huge loss to me. But I"m just an old boomer who remembers live radio in its hey day.

Not to jinx it for you, but Tampa is one of the most poorly positioned markets for the format, given that it has an Oldies/Classic Hits hybrid (WRBQ), a Classic Hits station (The Eagle), an 80s station (The Point), and a Hot AC playing plenty of currents (Mix 100.7). Never say never, especially in radio, but this is *far* from an ideal market for Variety Hits.
______________

A friend at Infinity has told me there will be very limited rollouts of Jack, and it will only be in markets where they see "gaping holes"... Tampa would not be a candidate under that scenario.
______________

I agree with you 100%...Marvelous Marv is one of the few jocks in the market who can make me laugh out loud at this little quick comments. It is so nice to have a midday show with a real person you know is there playing the music and taking calls. I could second that for WQYK's midday jock.

Thanks. I love WRBQ because it is the only female leaning station that sounds like an old time pop station. WMTX is okay, but I don't trust CC not to voice track. The Eagle was live 24/7 as the Bay.I know Cox is cheap, doesn't use any jingle package , and is mostly jockless now. WDUV would be a 100% better with live and warm jocks. Us old ladies like a live person at night with our hot tea. Maybe when Salem takes over WGUL, their staff could go to the Dove, but then horses could fly.

WRBQ Middays

Agreed -- I enjoy listening to Marvelous Marvin. Sometimes he just says "104.7 WRBQ" between songs, which is fine by me as a listener.

He had a memorable phoner the other day during the lunch hour with some crazed listener requesting "Riders On The Storm". The guy went into this long, rambling story about serving in Vietnam twice, etc. Every time Marvin tried to interject, the guy kept going. It was hilarious. Marvin even ran the listener's rant into the intro of the song (which is rather long before Jim Morrison's vocals begin), and for something that I imagine was done on the fly, it worked brilliantly. Marvin didn't say anything to put the guy down or to say "you're a lunatic" or anything, but you could tell everything you needed to from Marvin's tone of voice, one of those "please don't come to the station and do anything weird" tones. It was one of those rare situations that was both legit creepy (from the disturbed caller) and somehow hilarious at the same time. It made for good radio.
______________

Oldies is supportive in Tampa. Bury The Point, put 97X on the 101.5 stick, and launch Cox's 2nd adult hits station (after Cox's extremely sucessful 98-9 WMMO in Orlando) on 97.1.
Edited by PassDutch on 07/03/05 07:07 PM.

Re: WRBQ Middays

Marvin Boone has almost always been the most popular mid day personality in Tampa Bay for many years. This even goes back to Magic 96 days. Really turn him loose with his knowledge of oldies and he could make Scott Shannon look like an amateur. Hell I remember his father doing weekends on WGUL.

Although I havn't heard them in years , from what I recall, Marvelous Marv is really up there with Ron Lundy and Dan Ingram. He brings that old top 40 excitement back to radio whether he is playing oldies or classic hits.

That's already been done. It was called 107.3 The Bay.
______________

I don't recall there being an overnight jock on WBBY. But in the other dayparts, you're right.

When is the Salem/WGUL takeover supposed to happen? 100000watts.com has listed "WNTR calls requested" for WGUL for some time now.
______________

Cox wouldn't wanna go back to adult hits since it failed on 107.3. Anyways, let Jack arrive on WRBQ, and make oldies a quick comeback in Tampa to replace The Point.

I respectfully disagree.. I think the fact that Variety Hits could pull from a number of places (other than WRBQ - none of them Infinity) - makes it a tremendous candidate.

My thought process is to move Oldies back to 92.5 to save the format and put "Jack" on 104.7.

WRBQ offers things that no other female skewed station offers in our area. Live jocks who actually talk in something other than liner jargon. During a storm or other situation, news updates just like radio needs to do. And they have Marv.Tampa Bay has enough jockless stations that we don't need one more. I don't care if WRBQ changes music direction as long as Marvelous Marv stays.!!!!If WRBQ gets Jacked, I hope somebody else picks up Marv. You might think I believe he is doing a good job! I think he is best thing since Ron Lundy in middays.
