Trends Surprises Or No Surprises?

Post-trends post-mortem:

I suppose I was surprised at the way B101 has lost nearly half of their 12-plus numbers since last Fall, at how much of a slide SUNNY has taken in the same time, RNB basically flat for almost a year, WIRED edging lower and BEN not growing more.

I'm not surprised to see KYW up top, USL getting stronger, OGL and XTU basically tied (they seem to share the same audience, anyway) and WIP flatter than (fill in the blank here with an appropriate aphorism).

Possibilities: SUNNY is ripe for either a major make-over or flip, PEN in it's 33rd format since whenever catches and beats WIP with it's jock-strap snugly fastened, MMR actually catches YSP after the departure of How-weird, The HAWK gains even more traction in the ratings and RNB becomes musically more like Smooth Jazz.

Summer is the worst book for AC. Fall is the best. I'm not sure if B will be able to match their spectacular Fall 04 level, but they will certainly rebound Summer-Fall. If Sunny hangs in there, they will recieve some type of Christmas kiss as well for the Fall book. Even if Sunny isn't a success in their own right, they are a good spoiler in the sense that they hold down both WBEB and WOGL from reaching their full potentials, plus Sunny is cheap to run. WSNIs future depends on how content CC is with the stations role as a flanker/spoiler.

Even if Ben is down a bit this trend they are still doing better than they did as Mix. At least GM found a way for this frequency not to be in last place like it was for so many years. They just have to hope that Ben hasn't peaked already, this trend needs to be a wobble as opposed to the start of a longterm decline.

As has been stated, Summer is traditionally not a good book for B101's format. In my trends thread, someone blamed BEN for The B's dip. I don't see how that's even conceivable but we'd need access to a whole lot of breakdowns to be able to make an argument for that point.

Regarding Sunny 104.5, I've made this point before: When Clear Channel finds a format that they think is "the next big thing," they'll have to consider whether it's worth losing Sunny over. The beauty of Sunny is that it changes very little, it costs next-to-nothing to operate, and it serves many strategic purposes for CC. I believe it will take a major dynamic shift in the market for them to consider changing Sunny.

Are you kidding? 104.5 has been many things ,and all of them not for very long.
If sunny doesn't work it will flip, ALice 104.5 eventually didn't work, and they flipped it. Sunny is no big deal, it's just another toy for clear channel, and a another boring stale AC station playing safe predictable music.

No, I'm not kidding. 104.5 has been many things...not for very long? Does Star 104.5 ring any bells? Granted, Alice was a failed experiment but Sunny is a whole other animal. And the purpose Sunny serves for CC couldn't be much more different than what was happening when it was Alice.

I take it you're not a fan of Sunny? Or perhaps, you'd like to see it replaced with some other format? (Just a shot in the dark.)

Amen...comparing Sunny's contributions to the bottom line to anything else on 104.5 in recent years--including the last Sunny--is the epitome of apples to oranges.

Star could have had an even longer life had they not mucked it up with the "New Sound of Philadelphia" phase.
