Tri-Cities' 93.7 The Rockin' River

I believe that Cherry Creek is LMA'ing this station now.

Here is the info from when Tom bought it last year.

--
$650K KGSG-FM Tri-Cities WA (Pasco WA) from Gospel Music Broadcasting Corporation (Martin L. Gibbs) to Alexandra Communications Inc. (Thomas D. Hodgins, Cheryl Hodgins). $110 IK advance payment, $39K to brokerage firm MCH Enterprises paid by buyer, $500K note. Buyer is also paying to relocate station. LMA until closing. Duopoly with KUJJ-FM Pasco, WKJ-AM Walla Walla. [FCC file date 6/12/09]

Has the Tri-Cities ever branded a station as "The Bomb" or "Plutonium (insert FM frequency here)"?

Or even "K-BOOM!"?

I always felt being that close to Hanford, there has to be SOME pride in it........

93.7 The Rockin' River is playing a lot of crappy sounding MP3's, which makes the station sound low budget. I don't know how they think they'll be able to compete with the 100,000 watt Eagle 106.5.

I would have put a Rhythmic CHR format on 93.7 and called it "The Bomb!" :)

X-pert. Amazing that a station will do this in 2010...you also mentioned as well that KHTR was using low quality mp3's. Hard drives are CHEAP and you can buy "hits on a hard drive" or whatever you call it now for very little per song. There is NO reason to use mp3...unless you are or have stolen them from the Internet.. LOL Maybe they are just using itunes.

I had heard that the rockin river was going to try and position themselves between the Eagle and 97 Rock. Humm. Time will tell.

Bong - The bomb! that is good...I bet it has been discussed...but some 'suit' thought that it would not be in good taste! ha ha ha

Well, having spent some nights in a typical cheap motel in Pasco, I can truly say having been THERE:

Do not swat the bugs you see in a typical cheap Pasco motel room. They are BIGGER than you............

John,

Yes, I believe that both 93.7 KGSG and 104.3 KHTR are using stolen downloaded MP3 copies. If they had purchased them on iTunes, they would have been better quality. It's really too bad that these stations didn't spend a few more bucks to purchase full quality wav files from TM Studios. The small price would have been well worth it.

I don't understand how station owners can spend thousands of dollars on state of the art audio processors, and then play low quality MP3 files. It's like taking a bottle of pure spring water, and then mixing in a handful of dirt, before drinking it. It makes no sense.

This is almost sad. A 450w signal off Jump of Joe trying to compete with the KXRX and KEGX. Someone must have moosh for brains. I suppose their thinking is if they can bill enough to break even, its good enough for them. They certainly aren't going to take the market by storm. The promotion for "groove" was so low key, I didn't even know the gospel on 93.7 was gone.

It's a waste of a signal honestly. I've said it before in regards to KLKY and the Tri-Cities market, its time for a AAA run right down there. You have a signal that won't compete with the dominant classic rocker and the active rocker. It's doomed before the first powercord even hit the air.

The only hope is to do something unique, original and do it right. Additional, they have have to stay with it. All reports that the ownership isn't properly investing are interesting. Perhaps its best to not try and do it badly, leaving 93.7 a waste of a carrier.

By the way, The Rockin' River? That branding leaves A LOT to be desired. I've been out of radio 10 years and could do 10x better than that!

RE: Hanford tie in to on air branding.

KTCV 88.1 many years ago considered the "New-Clear Rock" moniker. It was shot down as it was deemed in inappropriate. It was a jab at the stale OK95 (KIOK) and its Top 40 format.

Those that own 93.7 signal are getting paid a fair amount for the LMA. As for those that are paying that amount AND programming it...well...good luck they will need it. IT is a big nut to make at the end of the month.

As for the bad mp3's on KHTR...not sure what is up there. I wonder if the OM/PD is playing some of his own music or??? Not like the owners to play bad audio like that. KHTR was the first to play ALL CD audio back in the day....when the others were still on records or carts. They HAVE invested in some new equipment since I have worked there...new transmitter and other stuff...so cheaping out like that is very strange.

I remember the old Oldies 104.3 in Boise playing some bad mp3's...and those were from the CLEAR CHANNEL servers.! Big Jack would re-dub in a better copy...and then some 'update" or whatever would happen and the bad files were back again.

I had a chance to catch KGSG on a trip to the Tri-Cities. I have to say its VERY WELL programmed for what they are doing. The liners and the music choices, I sensed only one guy could do such a great job. I wonder if it his him. He's been off the air in the Tri-Cities for a few years.

That said, no commericals and advertising something like 20,000 songs. It is pretty much a jukebox with liners so far. I've never been a fan of the "everything that rocks" format. Going from Rumours era Fleetwood Mac to Ozzy's "Over the Mountain" in a set is a huge bridge to gap. Sure, its diverse, that can't be argued, I've always felt its tries to bridge a bit too much at times. I seem to see that format employed by a new station trying to peel away listeners from the well established rock stations. Spokane had one about 5 - 7 years ago. Its now BOB FM. KGSG has the fortune of a very nice signal for running under 500 watts off the hill.

They were fun to listen to. Especially hearing Triumph's "Fight the good fight." That's impressive to see the programmer knows his/her rock chops that well. It might have been an iffy decision to launch this format in light of array of rock stations already down there. However, its being done VERY well. It'll be interesting to see where it goes if the man running it is who I think it is. Just his presence on air will bring massive visibility to this small station.

John,

As you've probably noticed, nearly all Clear Channel and former Clear Channel stations are airing the bad files from the Clear Channel corporate server. It's too bad that all the local PD's haven't replaced these bad files.

I have to listen to this lame station at work between 4 and 8 in the morning. That is unless our manager comes over and changes the staion to "The Key" which is a hideous station that plays top 40 pop dance club swill. Last week she stormed over in a huff, unplugged the boom box and pushed it onto the floor. This woman does not like rock. I've attempted many times to roll 88.1 KTCV while working but she always comes over and makes gagging gestures and says that this music makes her want to cut her wrists.
Is it the 'rocking river' that airs that freaking pathetic Bob and Tom show? Because as soon as we hear the opening music we freaking run to the radio and change it before they announce "It's the Bob and Tom show" I seriously think that only 12 year old boys like that show. We range from 19 to 47 and we all despise those 2 clowns.
My boss is an ideal barometer for any changes in format etc. She's in her 30's married with 3 children and seems to be very sensitive to music.
Anything intense like extreme metal utterly disturbs her to the point of irrationality
