Tri-Cities, WA market reflections

We're all chattering about the apparent latest happenings in Spokane again. The Tri-Cities have developments going on as well.

Interesting things happening down in the land of sagebrush are aplenty. Townsquare Media's desire to spin off several properties are among one of the big stories for 2011 and the upcoming flip of format and frequency of KEGX and KEYW.

Of note other things to discuss:
- The upswing of KIOK in the ratings.
- The decline rock is having in the market (KEGX/KXRX)
- The behind the scenes people making grabs at Townesquare media's trust stations.
- What formats could one of the spun off trust stations flip to?

Townsquare media's sale of trust properties has many rumours swirling, but nothing yet set in stone. Word has it Townsquare wants small nonprofits or locals to make offers. They are seeking to avoid any new large scale players coming to town. The trust properties according to the Fall '10 ratings seem not too terrible. KKSR 95.7 and KEGX 106.5 are the lowest rated FMs. KIOK had a nice book and continued its upward trend and KOLW isn't doing too badly. KTCR 1340's future seems most unclear. Being on AM, a graveyard frequency and barely able to cover the market at night. Spanish, religious ownership or brokered may very well be in its future.

KEGX and KXRX have been bleeding. KEGX has been worse. Influx of hispanics in the region? Has KEGX been treading water for years now? KXRX's bleeding has been less. The trend of rock's fall is interesting in this market. I'd have thought it'd been the opposite, with the active rocker suffering more. Classic rock stations have been more stable. High profile long-standing active rockers flaming out make news seemingly 2 -3 times a year. KUFO being the most recent example.

I'm not a country person, so what has made KIOK rise so strongly is a surprise to me. KORD appears to be steady. Any thoughts why KIOK has risen so fast. A 2010 anomoly or trend?

What might a new owner of one of the trust stations go for? KTCR seems pretty safe to go spanish, religious or brokered. The days of a profitable 1kw commerical AM on a terrible frequency are in its twilight. I'd be surprised if KEGX at 98.3 lost its classic rock format. The Eagle brand is so strongly identified with classic rock, it'd be a shame to lose it to, what, the upstart Rockin' River and its 450w signal?

I see KOLW being the most probable FM to be flipped. 1960s and 70's AM hits are nice, however I think someone might try for something a little out of the box on this one. I see it remaining english.

KIOK is an interesting one. Depends on who gets it. It could survive or be blown up. I'm sure Jeff Jacobs would love to get his hands on it, OK95 version 2.0. Original frequency and call letters to boot. Hello CHR war with Power 99 if that happens. It'd be a coup if he were to get it. If another player gets it who already has a country property, doubtful it survives. Just depends on who gets it. KIOK will more than likely remain english as well.

Thoughts? Reactions?
