Well I was in the car today bemusing the fact that Cumulus's WTYB 103.9 is *still* playing Christmas music. I wonder what's delayed Cumulus's flip of WTYB 103.9 - think they're going to wait until January now?
But anyway, I turned on WLOW 107.9 earlier this afternoon while running errands and they'd been tweaking their standards format a bit before they went to all-Christmas music. But now, the station as it was formerly is no more.
It's gone.
In its place, we now have "Familiar Favorites - 107.9 The Coast". No website as of yet.
An imaging liner states "Where three decades of familiar favorites means this..."
[clip of Aretha Franklin's "Respect"]
[clip of Billy Joel's "Piano Man"]
[clip of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time"]
Another one just played, featuring clips of "Brown-Eyed Girl", "Dancing Queen", and "Boogie Oogie".
No DJs, just PD Monty Jett stating that "the people you know and love will be back in January. We asked you what you wanted in a radio station and you told us more of the favorites that you love to carry you through the day. So sit back, relax, and enjoy all of your familiar favorites on the new 107.9 The Coast."
Um...WTF?
Okay, I can see Triad wanting to keep Oldies 98.3's audience sated. But why the hell are they going to play some of the same songs as sister station 98.3 JACK FM?! Can you say cannibalizing your listenership, boys and girls? Am I alone in thinking that this makes absolutely *no* sense whatsoever? What's this format called, anyway? It's not oldies; I wouldn't hear the song "Hot Stuff" on an Oldies station as I did earlier this afternoon.
Any thoughts out there? Bueller? Bueller?
