Triad Sports Station

Currently, UNC is on Hitz94.1 and Duke is on WIST Country Legends.

Wake Forest left WSJS after the 94-95 season. SJS picked up NC State for a season, then UNC for four. UNC got upset when SJS preempted an ACC tournament game for a NASCAR race. That game aired on WTOB. UNC went to 94.1 the next season and SJS went with NC State.

Hey, xpd - remember the 2000 Presidential Debate show?

I moved to Charlotte around 1998, but I did find an old listing for Tarheel sports from 1997. 98.7 was listed as the only one from the Triad, but WTOB did carry some games?

Hey XPD - You have the wrong CCX. I really WAS a political ally. I was the sidekick to the person you think I am. Back to Matt & TJ, didn't TJ shave his head at some point? I seem to remember a picture of Kim Reid with an electric shaver. What was that all about?

So, Harlow made it back to the area. That's very interesting. He's probably the only person who could get CC Raleigh fixed. What a mess!

Wow. I did have the wrong person. It took me all day to figure out who you were and it just suddenly hit me. Yes, you were a political ally. One of the very few. When you left CC you went to be with "your people" for awhile, correct? And now you have left "your people" and are back with the "other people" again. Have I got the correct person this time?

Yes I do. In fact, I still have a couple of the Budweiser mugs they handed out at that event at Wake Forest. That was a good show we did that night.

Speaking of sports, does anyone on this board know what Bob Licht is doing now? I hired Bob to be my Sports Director on WBIG radio back in the early, mid 80's. When I hired him I thought he was one of the most talented radio sports announcers I had run across. After WBIG went dark, he went to Charlotte and WBT to work with Steve Martin, the Sports Director there at the time. The last I heard of Bob, he was the radio play by play announcer for the Charlotte Hornets. Since the Hornet left Charlotte, I haven't heard where he ended up.

Got it!

Bob Licht is still with the Hornets, now bouncing between NOLA and OKC until the Big Easy gets back on its feet. When Steve Martin came back to Charlotte to work for the Bobcats, Bob moved up to TV play-by-play.

Later....

UNC was at 98.7. That's why it took me so long to remember. ;D I do remember UNC at WSJS for a while and I think they moved to 98.7 in the late 1990's. I think they were on WTOB too? UNC should've been on The Ticket.

I have an aircheck of Matt & TJ in May 1997 having a few laughs at the long speaches in Raleigh for the Whalers relocation. I thought that would be an interesting item a few years down the road.

Mr. W/S--

Would it be possible to for you to post that air check? I loved Matt & TJ, I thought they were pretty original and a fresh voice in the sometimes redundant world of morning radio.

BTW, I heard Pencola on The Buzzard this morning, What a waste of talent!

Only UNC games I ever heard on WTOB was that ACC tournament that got bumped from WSJS because of the race .. about six years ago. UNC went to 94.1 the next season.

Hey, xPD, don't put those mugs in the dishwasher! Sure wish I had tape of that show!

What is on 980 WAAA? I haven't been out that way since all the format flips. Is it Standards or something else?
It was standards for a while, simulcasting WIST. But you couldn't pick it up worth anything even in Winston-Salem, where WIST really needed it. That's why WIST couldn't survive. Now if Oldies 93 had gone classic hits combined with WIST having a full-power WAAA ...

I'm thinking WMFR could go all-sports. Can it be heard in Winston-Salem at night?

The point is that for a sports station to really succeed, it must have a signal that covers the whole metro. WMFR is in the same boat with many AM stations in the region - they can't cover the metro - can't even cover a whole county. I know, it's not their fault but it is the truth.

790 should have better signal over the area, but we are talking about the South. If they could just move their stick to the southside of Kernersville, they may have the signal needed on paper, but groundwave is so bad. :( Even if it is possible, it still may not work. With AM in the South, there is a big difference between paper and actual reception quality.

WMFR has serious signal problems in the metro. Not much signal at all in WS.
During the day, it's good enough for me.

Just my opinion, but with my taste in radio I can't be picky.

Now, WIST is another matter. Charlie Brown's teacher is usually on WBRF when I try to listen to WIST in Winston-Salem. I can't hear anything else.
