Triangle Sports Talk 1490/1090 is stunting

I was driving up 401 yesterday (1/3) from Fayetteville in the late afternoon, and picked up a faint signal of Christmas music on 1090. Some people keep their lights up after new years, but stations playing Xmas music this late is crazy.

It's because nobody cares. They don't make any money, sports won't get it. Might as well turn 'em off and save th electricity!

1090 is in Johnston County, southeast of Raleigh. The station is licensed to the town of Selma.

Just looked up Selma, NC on Radio-locator and they don't show a station on 1090 covering either Selma or Smithfield in Johnston county. How much power are they running? Being on that frequency, I'm sure they're daytime only. Also while on the subject of radio locator, what criteria do they use to list a station? I've noticed WZOO in Asheboro never comes up when Asheboro is looked up on radio-locator. Of course its no big deal if they don't show WZOO in their listings, it is one of the worst stations around. I don't think anyone connected with the station has ever worked at a "professional" radio station.

For some reason Radio Locator does not have the correct information for WTSB. WTSB is a daytime only station licensed for and running 9000 watts day power and 1700 watts during critical hours. The transmitter is just off US 70 a few miles east of Clayton. The City of License is Selma. The AM Query at FCC.gov has the correct information.

The WTSB call letters came from the old 580 in Lumberton that has been silent for a number of years. Radio Locator still references that station for WTSB.

I contacted radio-info.com about the WTSB listing a few weeks ago and nothing has happened. Same with WRSN/WKSL (updating format and website info).

On a side note, 1090/1490 has dropped the Christmas music.

They still have very abrupt interruptions for commercials, and probably legal IDs as well.

Can we really call this stunting? I suspect there is some automated or satellite delivered music product they are running while they fingure out what to do with the stations.

"Stunting" sounds like they are trying harder than "filling up time."

Come to think of it, though, a lot of stations just seem to be "filling up time" with their formats and presentations.

Today 1090 was sending a lovely mix of songs that sounded familiar but some of them sounded like different versions than the most popular version our way. I didn't catch any commercials in about five drivebys though.

Sounded to me like the audio is miswired so that we are only hearing "L-R", or the stereo difference channel. That will make familiar songs sound completely different. Lead vocals especially will sound funny, as if the singer is in another building, for example.

That very well could have been the case, awsherrill.

I also think the songs I heard were hits back in the 60s but not exactly songs that have been played a lot over the past 30 years on the usual oldies stations. I think one of them I recognized from a commercial, but again, I am not sure even of that.

Is this standards, or is it like 95.7 The Ride in Charlotte?

Raleigh needs standards.

Didn't hear any standards.
More folky kinds of 60s rock versions.
Right now there seems to be a band playing in a bar some kind of countryish song that Imus would play for a bumper.
Can't make out much of the lyrics because of the processing somewhere along the line.
Oh man now it's "A Girl like You" by Edwyn Collins. And there is definitely one channel being forced on to the other or combined too much at times.
