Tribune CEO to leave his post

As a Cubs fan, I hope the door hits him on the way out. He and his buddy Cherniss are singlehandedly responsible for screwing the nationwide base of Cubs fans out of being able to watch the team on WGN. I'd personally like to know how WGN America has performed since it dropped all Chicago programming, not that I have watched since that time.

Most of the blame for that belongs in the lap of the now-departed Village Idiot of Baseball, Bud Selig. He was the one who made the rule that once a superstation stopped being a superstation, it could no longer air major league baseball. It also applied to TBS and WWOR.

Besides, if you want to watch out-of-market baseball, buy MLB.TV or Extra Innings.

those reruns of America's Funniest Home Videos or whatever probably get higher national ratings than the 9PM Chicago news they replaced, they seem to be bent on erasing anything Chicago specific on that channel although they aired the Cubs parade which might be the last Chicago specific programing on WGNA

is there anything stopping them from airing the Chicago news other than a lack of national advertiser interest in elderly snowbirds in Florida and Arizona who miss it yet won't stream it?

WGN America also carried some Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls games. 30 regular season and 1 or 2 pre-season SOX games aired prior to the ridiculous decision made by Peter Ligouri to remove all Chicago sports and news. Tribune Broadcasting did not have to pay MLB for the rights to air the games to a national audience. If WGN ever wanted to change it's mind, they would have to pay MLB just like TBS, ESPN, FS1 are presently doing. There is no going back to the former system. I recall the dispute last year that Dish Network had with Tribune when all Tribune-owned stations were pulled from Dish network. The main reason was over the higher fees which were asked for WGN America. Dish network claimed that the ratings have gone DOWN compared to the time when WGN America carried sports.

No, since it's Tribune-owned content. But WGN newscasts are available via their website (and phone app?), so they're probably not missed all that much on WGNA.

And I resemble that "elderly snowbirds in Arizona" remark, save for the fact that I've lived in Arizona year-round since 1994. But if I want a WGN (or other Chicago) newscast, I stream it. :D

Syndex has nothing to do with local sports rights on superstations. That's a separate issue.

Since the Cubs and Tribune are under separate ownership now, they probably didn't want to pay for expensive rights fees, and leagues wanna sell more out of market sports packages

It's more likely they don't have the money. They lost radio rights to CBS (WBBM, then WSCR) and part of the TV rights to ABC (WLS-TV) two years ago. But keeping them off WGN America is an MLB rule, as well as having to do with Tribune's decision to end all Chicago-based programming on that channel.
