Tribune cuts back on newscasts.

It looks like a pair of Tribune O&Os are shutting down their news operations in December, as WPHL-17/Philadelphia and KSWB-69/San Diego will cease production on their prime-time broadcasts. However, their 10PM slots will be filled with newscasts produced by NBC O&Os WCAU-10(For WPHL) and KNSD-39(For KSWB) respectively.

There are active discussions on this subject currently underway on the Philadelphia (for WPHL) and California (for KSWB) TV boards.

To put a national trend spin on this

I wonder if this will be a trend for Tribune Company. Interesting how they are using NBC to produce their "news needs" so to speak

I know in Chicago WGN-TV has always been BIG on news

I suspect Tribune will continue to produce "in-house" local newscasts for WPIX-11 New York, WGN-9 Chicago, KTLA-5 Los Angeles and KWGN-2 Denver, given they're all VHF stations with long-standing news departments.

But the company's UHF stations could be another story.

Well since things between NBC and Pax fell apart earlier this year, NBC is likely looking to connect with other stations. Perhaps NBC affiliates in some markets might partner with some non-Tribune WB affiliates, like NBC affiliates partnered with Pax affiliates? In Detroit I'd like to see WDIV partner with WDWB/20, seeing as at the moment the Detroit market only has THREE choices for local televised news (WJBK, WDIV, WXYZ). It would be WDWB (formerly WXON)'s first newscast in a very long time.

In Cleveland, this would be the perfect opportunity for WKYC to put an Akron newscast back on the air (not just on cable), on WBNX/55. It has been discussed before that WBNX is highly unlikely to have a newscast due to its ownership, but you never know.

In Philadelphia, didn't WPHL have news before WTXF (Fox 29, formerly WTAF), which started its news operation in 1986?

NBC (WTVJ) already has been doing this for WBZL/39 in Miami for years. In some markets it makes sense: with the discussions on KDAF/WB33's news in Dallas, wouldn't surprise if they did the same thing in that market...
