Tribune + other stations re-up with trash talk through 2018

NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution said today the talk-show franchises Maury, The Jerry Springer Show and The Steve Wilkos Show have been sold through September 2018. Station groups Tribune, Sinclair, Hearst, Weigel and Sunbeam are included in the deal, which extends the shows’ current deals for an additional two seasons and reps 65% of the U.S.. The pact will keep them in national syndication for at least four more seasons on top stations WPIX New York, KTLA Los Angeles, WGN Chicago and WCIU Chicago, WPHL Philadelphia, WLVI Boston, KDAF Dallas, WPGH Pittsburgh, WTTE Columbus and WKCF Orlando among others.

More of the same garbage or worse for 4 more years. I just hope none of them end up on WREG CBS 3 in Memphis since Tribune has taken them over.

WJZ 13 (CBS owned and operated) runs Maury. If a CBS owned station can do so, and it's produced by NBCUniversal, why wouldn't it be a possibility for a Tribune CBS station to carry it? I find interesting is that it's produced by NBCUniversal but the NBC owned and operated will rather put low rated Access Hollywood Live or experimental but low rated shows like 'Jeff Probst' on air. I also find it interesting that CBS likes to have a morning talk show that it feels is intelligent and high brow over Good Morning America, but will slot Maury right after it in Baltimore but that's just specific to Baltimore.

NBC likes being the in the business of creating trash that gets ratings but feels it shouldn't be on it's stations. Would Disney/ABC be able to do such or would it tarnish the Disney company image?

Another peculiarity is if Tribune ever has retransmission fee issues with Comcast. Comcast owns NBCUniversal that produces that trash - so by depriving Tribune stations viewership (if it ever gets to the point where Comcast has to pull the station), it might erode viewership of it's own shows.

Many Tribune stations double run these shows, so it occupies 6 hours of television hours, more programming to it than the CW/MyNetwork programming that a typical Tribune station offers.

As critical as I've been of WREG of being infomercial crazy (which started when they were owned by Local TV), I'll give them credit for keeping a fairly decent lineup during local daytime with local news, Inside Edition (Their worst program, but still not as bad as the trash talk) and Jeopardy. I'd hate to see WREG go to trash talk with their being owned by Tribune now. I'd really rather see the trash talk go off completely, but if not, I'd rather see them stay on the Fox or CW stations.
