Like a growing number of people who have TiVo or DVR’s, I’ve been recording my favorite shows and watching them later in order to avoid the ever-increasing commercial load. But the networks have got smart. Now they have started programming not on the hour or half-hour, but a few minutes later, so that if one is recording a show the chances are very good that one will miss the final minute or two of the program because of the time difference. However I’ve learned from my cable company how to compensate for this tactic by the networks. When you go to record a show on a DVR, instead of recording a program say on a regular basis, use the one-time option. And before you click the yellow button, scroll over, using the key pad on your remote to the left. There you will find the time when the show starts and ends. This gives one the option of recording a show say at 10:01 instead of 10:00, or ending a show at 11:03 instead of 11:00. Some cable networks run the same commercials during every break and I figure why should I be forced to watch some smiling jerk with an erection problem, or snake oil salesmen trying to sell me miracle cures for baldness when I can just fast-forward past these insipid commercials and watch the program I’ve taped.

I always pad my season passes on my TiVo with a two-minute-early start and a five-minute-late end. Very rarely does this prove to be not enough.
