Trio To Cease Broadcasting On Cable/Satellite; Will Switch To Internet Service

Ever since DirecTV dropped it nearly a year ago from it's services, the future of the NBC/Universal-owned cable/satellite network Trio has been uncertain.

Today (November 21st), it was announced that Trio will cease being distributed on cable and satellite as of January 1st. But Trio isn't going away completely. It will be available on the Internet, and at least some of Trio's current programming will follow.

This is a Mediaweek.comn article on the demise of Trio as a cable/satellite network. By contrast, this is an NBC/Universal press release which is classic "spin": It touts the move to the 'Net in the first paragraph. Only in the second paragraph is it announced that Trio will no longer be available on cable or satellite.

Could this be the wave of the future: Cable/satellite networks that have struggled for distribution on those two platforms deciding to switch to distribution via the Internet??

No big loss. I used to enjoy Trio when it was owned by the CBC and presented Canadian, British and other foreign programs (or programmes). After Universal took over Trio sort of lost its way and its reason for being.

It's no "mystery" what will happen to Trio. It will be reborn as Sleuth on a digital tier near you. :)

Like the Australian cop show "Blue Heelers" (is that what Australian cops are called?. Boy I miss Lisa McCune who played Maggie.

Didn't/doesn't Trio show reruns of "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in"?

I only got to see Trio at times when I was visiting relatives in the Memphis area. The main things I liked on it were Laugh-in and Letterman reruns, and although I never got to see it, I thought I would have liked Brilliant but Cancelled. It looks like it would make sense to move these over to Bravo. I'd definitely rather see them than the (Bleep) Eye shows.

I'd had the thought at times that perhaps in the future you could get favorite TV shows over the Internet, and perhaps any episode of favorite shows at any time, like video on demand on cable now.
