Trip to New Orleans

I admit, it's been several years since I have been to New Orleans. I drove down a few weeks ago and was shocked! There's no more WRNO (The Rock of New Orleans). And what's up with B-97? "The afternoon swirl!" Do what? I am proud to say that I worked at B 97 in '84 & '85 when "The afternoon swirl" was Brian Pearce. What a history with Cajun Ken Cooper, Boomer, Fast Eddy and yes the return of Skinny Tommy. Now it's syndicated in the morning, voice tracked mid-day etc... etc... etc... What's up with radio today? Just for old times, "The B lines are open at 260-97-97... 84 at the airport, 82 on the north shore and 85 downtown at the Superdome Hyatt Regency with 3 and no talk for Kenner on B-97 FM!!" It's still in my soul.

Pobryan, I was born and raised here in the NOLA area. Proud to call it home! Yep, there's no more WRNO as "The Rock of New Orleans." Check out WRNO on Wikipedia. Even though it's Wikipedia, and it sometimes tends to be brushed off because the info can be skewed, it's still pretty correct in explaining the history of the station. At least the way I remember it.... :p

And as far as B-97 is concerned, the morning show is Kraddick (piped in, Dallas), midday is live/local with Jammer (the PD), The Afternoon Swirl is live/local, night's are live/local with Speedy, and weekends are live/local too. The only stuff not live/local is Kraddick, AT40, Hollywood Hamilton's Weekend Top 30, and Supermixx (SupeRadio). Jammer has worked in New Orleans before. I grew up listening to B-97FM! No doubt about it; it's not what we used to have back then when you guys were at the wheel, but what you hear today is closest to being what it used to be years! Many thanks to Jammer for creating a fun B-97 again, and Entercom for giving him control to be creative with his station! No CONsultant!

He brought in jingles with the "Z-100" melody, which was a good thing because I always remember B-97 having either the "Z-100" or "WPLJ" melody in their jingles. He also created "The iPod Shuffle" during the lunch hour on weekdays and "Sunday Night Slow-Motion," 8pm-midnight. The Shuffle is one hour of your favorite old B-97 tunes, 80's-now, played with currents and requests. Slow-Motion is kinda like "The Sunday Night Dedication Party" the B used to do live from Bart's On The Lake. Take dedications, requests, etc.... Only exception is that it's not live on location, it's all studio. Check out B-97 on Wikipedia, too! Just put in "WEZB" in the search. I contributed to some of the info on there, and have gotten others who worked there to do the same. I encourage you to do the same if we've left something out!

Btw, I used to work at B-97 (2002-2005). The old B-97FM is still in my soul, too! While there, I started referring to B-97 as "The B" sometimes on the mic. That caught on again, and now they all do it! I wish I was working there again right now under Jammer's reign! I did overnights, then eventually weekends when they got rid of the overnight shift. I'll tell you more about my experience at the B. Do you have an e-mail address??

Pobryan, if you want to hear Fast Eddie, take a drive towards Lafayette and tune to 102.1 where he does mornings with his wife Jenn. He even PA announces ULL basketball games at the Cajundome, and he also announces the Boys Top 28 State Prep Basketball Tournament. There is also a "Tuna" in the afternoons at Big 102.1 I believe worked at the "B" in the 80's.

"...if you want to hear Fast Eddie, take a drive towards Lafayette and tune to 102.1..."

I thought Fast Eddie was in Dallas, TX selling pre-owned vehicles and rebuilding classics. ??? Unless he's voice tracking! ;) He's got a website too, by the way. It's at fasteddiecoyle.com

Its not the same Fast Eddie. There are many different guys with such prefixes as "fast...hollywood...big...kid...the real.." and so on and so forth.
While we're on the subject of the old days at the "Bee", don't forget about Ugly Jock Lousteau, Jack da Whack, Brother Dave Nichols, the supercard, the bee buggies doing parade progress reports. I remember using the Supercard at Superspuds for 2-for-1 gigantic all topping potatoes. Couldn't walk right for days after that one. Oh yeah the good ole days of high energy locally plugged-in top 40!!
And I sure as hell miss the old WRNO. I think they were at their best when they broadcast from the dingy old Imperial House Hotel on North Causeway as Rock 99. People like Soxless, Sambo, Warren, J. Douglas, Rod Glenn, and Jim White kept "da Rock" going. Every stop set included a beer spot, a soda spot, Soundtrek audio and the Abalon theatre. "Its five o'clock at the Rock of New Orleans...WRNO!"
