Trip to Phoenix

Later this week, my wife and I are heading out to Phoenix to catch the Reds in a few Cactus League games, and I plan on bringing one of my receivers.

We'll do a couple of day trips (which I hope turn into a night time DX), including one to Cottonwood and Prescott. Maybe, a day & evening in Tuscon.

What Mexican AM am I most likely to hear, and what stations should I look for?

I'm sure Radioman148 will want a full report on his Chicago stations, so I've put them my list.

Others, please feel free to let me know if you have any requests or suggestions.

Happy trails to you.

I don't know how much luck you'll have with Chicago stations in Phoenix, although I'm told WBBM makes it out there sometimes. In any event, have a great trip & I'll be looking for your reports.

If you are going to be seeing the Reds, how about a report on if you can pick up one or both of the Cincinnati 50,000 watt stations: WLW and WCKY.

1530 is nearly impossible under normal conditions... it is totally directional to the East, and the KFBK signal is quite strong in AZ. The only time in the past I ever got 1530 in PHX was right before sunset in Sacramento while Cincinnati is still on day pattern.

700 has a small chance, but with KALL with 10 kw on 700 from SLC, this is another unlikely catch.

On the way up I-17, when you get to Bear Valley, look off to your left as you go through. You will see the monstorus array of 710.

And if you like 'beautiful music' tune to KHFM in Prescott (102.5). You can hear the signal from just north of Phoenix all teh way to prescott and beyond.

That's 102.1. KNIX is 102.5.

WBBM will make it to Phoenix, but it's rare. Forget about WSCR (Too much KLTT Denver and possibly KMZQ Las Vegas), WGN (KDWN Las Vegas), WLS (KDXU St. George UT), or WMVP (beams away from the west).

WWL might be heard there.

I recently heard it on the Global Tuners Mojave Desert tuner. It was not on top for very long like the other stations on 870.

I've never heard WWL in Phoenix, but KWKH 1130 Shreveport is a semi-regular.

Nowadays with other stations on the 'clear' channel frequencies, WWL is a challenge out west but in the 70s, it was a regular in northern California at night.

There seem to be some DX possibilities on the lower regional frequencies during sunrise/sunset, & even at night. But to hear some of the "new" stations on the formerly clear channels will be a treat for me.

I've scanned my outdated NRC antenna pattern book, and I am bringing a copy of the AM Logbook listings. Plus, I'm bringing .pdf copies of DX News. Everything is loaded on my netbook.

And during our travels, I'll check out 102.1 and the FM dial in general.

Should be interesting.

KOMO sometimes comes in like a local, ditto CKWX. I'd also try for WLW and WBBM, as well as WWL. Nice to visit without that darn 117 degree heat killin' you!

We save those 117 degree days for visitors. Keeps the population down. ;D

I highly doubt any Chicago stations could be heard in Phoenix! The most northeasterly station I can get is Nebraska. You'll get some Wyoming (I think? KTWO 1030. There are so many Spanish lang. stations you'll have difficulty figuring out which are N Americans and which are truly Mexicans. You might get Cuba on 1180. You'll get many of the bigger Los Angeles ones: 640 KFI on a good day, KNX talk 1070, and KGO 810 fair to weak out of San Fran. WOAI 1200 out of San Antonio should be good listening on car radio. I like Phoenix for DXing, but not so great for transpacific as we have the rest of the country to the West of us, plus a lot of stations coming in from the east and south to compete over them. But I highly, HIGHLY doubt any Chicago stations, heck the furthest east stations you can get would be Nebraska or Oklahoma.

Depending on the time you listen, Gelp, you could find some interesting catches from back East. David Eduardo's timing is one such instance, vis-a-vis power changes from different time zones.

A lot of the Western powerhouses are North of you. While they're not exactly 90° nulls to Chicago or Cincinnati, there should be some elbow room. If you get a quiet Aurora night, who can tell?

I'm not familiar at all with the cx out West ; never been there ; am not familiar with the local dial where you'll be. If I were there, though, I'd spin some tape, try a null or two, and try for WHAS, WBZ and The Chicago 1160 just for practice.

Sounds like a great excursion. The last time Pooch and I were in Florida this time of year, we'd catch a few Blue Jays-Phillies day games and I'd hit the radio dials at night.

Good DX to you!

I remember when I was in Vegas in April 2006 (only a few hundred miles NW of Phoenix, I believe), the only station I heard there that I've also heard here in Ohio was WBAP. I believe I also caught KRLD there, and I would hear that here in Columbus in January 2007. I do remember KALL, KFI and KNBR being blasters on the Strip.

I've never heard anything intelligible on 1000, mostly due to local KXEG 1010 bleeding over. If one goes far enough east, it might be audible - I'll have to try it next time I'm in Mesa.

Never heard anything but jumble on 1130, but I have heard CFXL 1140 from Calgary on occasion, so it might be possible. WLW is impossible with KALL booming in here. Like said earlier, WBBM is possible, but rare and always weak.

Staying near the Biltmore.

I did get to listen for a few minutes last night using a Tecsun PL-606. Not able to write anything down.

Reception in our hotel was very good. No interference. Have a southern facing window.

A few observations, although the locals know all this.

Surprised at the number of frequencies with dueling signals, and the lack of signal "clutter".

At least last night, it was obvious that the Mexicans have abandoned the AM band.

640 KFI wasn't as strong as I had thought it would be. 1070 KNX was much stronger than KFI.

820 WBAP & 1080 KRLD were there.

1110 KFAB Omaha was on top of the frequency.

1520 KOKC OK City. Nice to hear them again. They used to be one of the few top 40 stations folks in rural western communities could hear.

1100 I was hearing a very weak station on the frequency with a mention of a Scottsdale business, so I assume it was a harmonic of 550.
