Triple A Format

Hello PHX,

I'm just a casual observer of your radio market with a question. Do any radio stations position themself as a Triple A station? From what I can tell just from listening to some streams, no one seems to be hitting this format like KFOG/SF, WXRT/Chicago, KSWD/LA, etc.

Would a format like this work in Phoenix? If you had the opportunity to create a station like this, what would you do to achieve success?

It's been tried and failed a couple of times.

Full market signals: KIOG (K-104, 104.7, went bankrupt, became KZZP in the early 80's). KZON (101.5, early 90's, ran until Jorgenson had to take out a loan to buy KOY AM-FM and needed ratings and revenue to pay the note. It morphed into a pop-alternative format and stayed that way until CBS's Free FM experiment.)

Rimshots: KSTM (107.1 out of Apache Junction, now KVVA)

Several of the KSTM alumni made their way to KZON in its AAA days. One guy in particular, Andy Olson, has since launched a web station, Radio Free Phoenix, which has seemingly survived online longer than some of the AAA radio stations in this town.

If KCDX 103.1 is still on, it's an automated freeform station that its owner is keeping on the air as his personal jukebox until someone offers him a pile of money to buy it.

AAA is a hard format to do well with, outside of a few stations across the country like WXRT. Many who try it, fail.

Radio Free Phoenix, named Best Internet Station, by the Phoenix New Times, will celebrate it's 6th year on-air, this August!

I had a chance to check out RFP for a while today. Very eclectic! Just out of curiosity, home much money is generated in donations each year?
