Triple A in Savannah?

Do you think it's time to bring Triple A back to the Savannah/ Hilton Head market? What's the closest thing to it in that area? Quality Rock?

I'd love to see AAA back in Savannah, and yes, 105.3 is the closest thing we have to that.

Ah, how I miss WWVV-FM, Wave 104.9.

Maybe one day, Savannah will once again see AAA, this time on a much bigger signal.

I'm not too sure if we will see another straight-on attempt for AAA.

First, the Wave never quite made it. For years, it juggled between AAA, Hot AC, and modern rock. Even if Adventure had kept 104.9, I doubt the Wave would still be around right now. That signal is a dog outside of Beaufort and Jasper counties.

Also, the "Quality Rock" format that WRHQ and WMMO/Orlando sort-of pioneered is becoming the new "format of the month" and most industry pubs consider them AAA.

Lastly, the Savannah market is pretty stale and not primed for change...nobody has the cash for a major format flip and doing it right.

I will, however, consider signing on an alternative-leaning AAA. I just need about $1.5 million to buy one of the rimshots down here ;D...anybody want to contribute financially?

Back in 2005, Pat Garrett, Hoyle Dempsey and I talked about the plausibility of a Jack format coming to Savannah. I said, "We already have a Jack format here; we just call it Jerry."

Soon after, Jack came to Savannah. Soon after THAT, Jack left. Jerry's still there.

A true AAA? No chance. There isn't enough of an audience for that in Sav. White people listen to Country, Pop, Rock then Rap. 102.1 is getting the younger but softer crowd.

Ok, I can give you that, but don't discount the rather affluent, eclectic & "white" audience in & around Hilton Head.

Q does quite well for what passes as AAA (Rock AC is a more accurate description). If Wave didn't suffer from low power & schitzophrenia (sp), it may have stood a chance.

If a AAA station is going to sign on it needs to be targeted to Beaufort County...most importantly Hilton Head and Bluffton.

Wave's biggest problem was the fact that it really wasn't marketed very well. No TV commercials, no billboards, few bumper stickers, and a small promotions staff. Not to mention the low power on 104.9, frequency change, and the format tweaks.

To be honest, an AAA could do well here in SC on any of the stations up here with the right chemistry. WRHQ's signal has some real holes in it around HHI/Bluffton. I'd love to see a "Q-105" simulcast on 104.9, but that's pure armchair GMing righr there...

(Who would love to prove that AAA can work around here...and would un-retire from radio for that purpose only)
