Trivia question - oldies radio groups - who are they

H

I'm going to bed and leaving you with this trivia question that most PD's won't know the answer but the oldies fan will or might know. This might be a paradox or an oxymoran question, I think.

one foreign group shot to number 1 in 1970 with a protest song, who was the group and the subject of this protest song.

in 1972 the next group was formed in England(but not a british group), whose name, was derived on a anti, anti-protest basis, not specfically an answer to the first group, but maybe in principle, who was this group.

If I give anymore clues it would be too easy...It may be too easy for gridleak, or andreajesus, or alex browne or g8oldies, or palalwanabe, and others I've dealt with in the past.....these folks are mega tough.

When i get up tomorrow I'll see who got it first, the earliest correct post will win. Or course sometimes I can't sleep and I may get up and check and have a winner by midnight.

put on your thinking caps !!!!

Andrea

what are you doing up at 4:00 am, you know your oldies, i'm surprised you didn't know the answer, I'll send you a personal message with the answers, right now.

wow.....you folks take no prisoners when it comes to oldies trivia. good Job !!!! firepoint525

foreign group went to #1

In 1970 A Canadian group the "Guess Who" went to #1 with "American Woman", an anti-American protest song. Part of the anti-war scene.

American woman, I said get way
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come hanging around my door
Don't want to see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away
American woman, listen what I say
American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be

part 2
In 1972 The sons of American military men(stationed in England) and British mothers formed a band while in high school in England. They were cognizant of all the Anti-American feelings around the world at the time, one day while listening to music on an "Americana Jukebox", they were struck by a chord of patriotism for their home land and decided to name their new band "America" as a protest to all the anti-American feelings around them. An anti, anti protest song you might say..

Ouch! why do ya have to be hatin on radio PD's? :-[ A lot of us are real oldies fans, too. ;)

I think it was the oldies fan in me that knew them both. The PD in me is proud to pay his mortgage by playing both. 8)

Hi Ken....I said most PD's won't know the answer....I'll take your word that you knew the answer.........i hope I got the attention of other PD's, because the state of Oldies radio tells me most of them don't, beyond what little they program.. Small playlists, no imaginations in special programming at a local level. everyone depends on Goddards Gold, Beatle brunch, Rock Roll and Remember....those are so easy to program, and give them local flavor in some cases. I could give you 50 didfferent themes that i could do with just 4 Whitburn Books, never run put of material(with three decades of music and tons of music to draw from), and keep listeners listening at a good rate. Oldies stations are disapearing at an alarming rate, and it's due to the programming. Please no comments from others about the business end,ROI,50 + demographic, I'm talking pure programming. When Oldfies rdaio came on the scene some 30 years ago, 800 songs we had'nt heard in a while was sufficient, those are a little wore out. Lower charting song are in the eye of the beholder not the listening audience, they know their stuff and would appreciate a little more spread in programming, again please no comments from anyone about advertiser's we can discuss them else where. And finally most Pd's don'y have the passion or the knowledge of the music too see beyong their nose, and if I had a chance to program a station i would jump at the cahance , but i don't have the resume, or most importtanly i haven't failed at svereal other station, whicj seems to be the criteria for hiring some one, almost like the NFL, you don't win games and are fired, you' be hired tomorrow by the other team that just fired someone.

it's 1:58 Pm mst where I am At.....if you are on line quickly.....The song to know is "to love him is to love him" by the Teddy Bears was inspired by what, and who was the driving force behind the teddy bears and also a band memeber....i didn't look this up , i have this stuff in my head 24/7, this is not an obscure answer , beacause the question involves a man consifered a genius of POP music. See how fast a PD can answer this . my money is on a non Pd answering this first.

If you found this question, also i have one two rows down asking for military theme hits, and so far no PD has responded , i already have a list if close to thirty, cuts and no one come with at least 1 or 2.

The clock starts now. and if anyone would like to challenge anytime lets go green and start the clock.

Go Steelers

That trivia question is TOO EASY for me, if i have the correct answer - Phil Spector?? :)

Andrea

A record answer time even for AJ, yes it is Phil Spector. but you didn't give me the inspiration for the Title, AJ, quickly.

Hornet, my response was more in humor than in validation of PD's or what we do. It is obvious that you don't think highly of PD's. However, I will say as is the case in an profession - there are good ones and bad ones.

But, I do have to admit to leaning to much on Goddard. He is my afternoon guy (grin). By the way, Goddard is unbeatable at the obscure music trivia game. He has the answers and all the records.

As a Pittsburgh boy I agree with the 'Go Steelers' battle cry. Which is not particularily popular when you program stations in Phoenix.

I am gonna drift into the background. I don't post much - as a guy who doesn't use a fictious screen name I have found its best just listen most of the time.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Hey Kris I sent you a personal message explaining my response , please read....Go Steelers

Hornet, I read the PM. Gotta say, no explanation needed. There are a lot of 'programmers' guiding some of America's oldies/classic hits stations that perhaps are a bit 'underqualified' (understatement to say the least). Your comments (and frustration) of what is comming out of the speakers of some radio stations these days is completely understandable.

This particular section of radioinfo attracts of knowledgeable people that have great passion for radio. Ya gotta like that.

You mean like "Ballad of the Green Berets" and "Soldier Boy" and the like? Or ones like "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" that was about a criminal / prisoner and turned into a returning soldier's song due to the era?

Or Sky Pilot, or Galveston that had soldier / girl left behind stories? Or Kenny Roger's "Ruby" about a war-injured veteran?

hey david good ones, those were good examples, I'd leave out tie a yollow ribbon, like you said I was were more of a theme. Since I am awful with lyrics I like the way you explained the connection of the song to Military. I had no clue that Ruby was about a wounded soldier. I'm coping you entry two rows down to include with the others so far. Thanks

here are a couple More

Universal Soldier (Viet nam)- Glen Campbell and Donovan both
"he's fighting for canada , he's fighting for france, he's fighting for the USA"

"Lights Of Albuquerque" (Viet Nam)
"the medic says he doesnt stand a chance, and the wounded man replies , before i die i want to see once more the lights of Albuquerque"

yes gr8oldies great choices.........read "memorial day programming assignment" and you will see your picks made into the top 54 militaqry hits, thanks for your input
