Tropo conditions opening up!!

Mrwns said:
Picked up KEXP today. Completely overriding the KUOW Bellingham repeater.

I also managed to pick up KRWM quite clearly, I can still hear CHWF struggling to fight KRWM, but KRWM was definitely the dominate one.

KUOW has been quite troublesome for me to pick up, most of the time, I can't get anything, today it's as clear as a local.

That DOES happen sometimes on 94.9. And lately, I've even had to shut off my little Part 15 transmitter on 94.9 (normally an unlistenabley BAD Seattle frequency in Bellingham - aren't they ALL?) because I couldn't even hear it EVEN 2 FEET AWAY FROM IT. It's just been ABSOLUTELY WHIPPING my ass lately (EVEN THE HD SIGNALS COME IN ROCK SOLID!! IMPOSSIBLE most of the year! ESPECIALLY TONIGHT!!) Though the HD seems to be fizzling out right now.....

Any other reports? E-Mail me at [email protected]........

KXDD on I-5 around I-405, Spanish on 103.3 while shielded by northhill of Edgewood, which blocks KKCW and the Metropark. Heard KGON at the base of Sumner Tapps Hwy in Sumner, as well as KKRZ. KINK is a regular, due to less Co-channel, KFFM in spots, but is more of a challenge because of the Victoria stick. KPQ fm is heard like a local between South Prairie and Orting on HWY 162, and also, as I am informed, able to be picked up near the Hood Canal. I have listened to KXDD on the ferry dock in Bremerton. I am currently camped out on Channel 2, watching video aurals mix between CBUT and KATU, and possibly another station. I cannot wait to see what it could be! Using a VU-90, which isn't the best at low VHF, but still diggin it! I am South West of Buckley right now, taking advantage of reflections from the nearby range. Audio on 10, which is usually from Van BC. Back to FM, soon to update.

Using terrain to block IBOC and loving airplane scatter.

Happy DXing!

I know, bad edicate to reply before anyone else does, but I have to say... I am listening to the Quake, watching CBC, with mixes from ABC, and BBQing simultaneously.

Happy Memorial Day!

-Ty

Hmm, my crappy RCA TV can't pick up nothing on Channel 2. Not the slight chance of CBUT. :( My scanner only does up to 50 mHz, which is not enough for 2, and my scanner can only do Channels 16-20.

More DX. Around 1:00am I pointed the VU 90 northeast and had a Global TV affiliate on Ch2, very strong. A quick CTV logo and another station without I.D. They were airing infomercials. I assume one of them was the Calgary, AB Global affiliate, and the other still a mystery. Also a CBC affiliate on CH3 for around a half hour. English launguage. I noticed for a short time, Ch 4 had some mixing occur with another station. Around 2am all condtions faded away, with CBUT as usual. No FM DX noted. Sporadic E skip for sure. I scrambled to find a tape to record but didn't get it in time. Still monitoring Ch2, CBUT with a slight mix of video from another station.

update soon.

I will be monitoring my GE Superadio....  Tropo + E-Skip = a very good time to pick up DX!!  If I find anything I will let you guys know! I'll look for things on my TV I have dedicated to such a task as well... But to remind you all, the peak DX season is from late July to early August here in the Puget Sound Area. And it would be interesting as well to get feedback from people who get DX on a digital level! As in any DTV that gets recieved here, or even IBOC/HD Radio that end up making it to here!

Monitor our sun as well.... Sunspots and solar flares usually make FM and TV frequencies light up! But at the same time, makes AM unlistenable.

The conditions have gone CRAZY!

First, on 101.9 I heard, "Rock 101.9" ZZ top, Metallica etc... Then loud and clear, setting off my RDS - Sunny 101.9, Country, with Big and Rich, Big Time, and several ads, one for All Tel, then another for a business in Rugby, a spot for a business off of HWY 3 and a few other liners. This station came in with no static at all. I looked it up and found it to be KBTO in North Dakota.

The TV is blowing up too, Global on ch2, CBC on 3 with another station mixing, CTV on 2, and ch 4 and 5 nearly wiped out by another station on each. KOMO TV is gone right now.

Ch-3 may be the Chillwack CBC repeater.

Ch-4 is probably KXLY.

Ch-5 is probably Medford, OR? (KOBI)

My crappy RCA tv is getting a low hum on 3. No video or audio, just a low hum. Maybe E-skip is trying to get in!!

-crainbebo

Rock 101.9 is in Fargo ND,

CTV 2 is in Regina SK
CBC 3 is in SK as well.

I would think the station on 4 is also coming from the same area. Channel 5 got wiped out as well.

More to come.

KUOW broadcasts in Stereo 95% of the time nowadays, but every now and then when they go mono it does wonders in the fringe!
All this warm weather is helping them out to no doubt!

No issues locking HD (though I’m only 10 miles from capitol most of the time Lol)
However! Stereo on and off won’t do anything to affect those amazing reports Bongwater!

hmm, lets see KFFM pops up every now and then on the 405. OH! and KINK overrode my "vacant" channel for my little vehicle transmitter. That was fun! (Location: SR 522 Midday)

And a response to an earlier part of the thread, KXDD 104.1 comes in quite well on I-5, near exit 161, then again at 159.
For those interested, 10-12 metre has opened recently, with contacts made along the west coast, Mid-west, East coast and Hawaii. I don't have a 6 metre station up currently, but if Channel 2 is open, I'm sure it's busy as well.

Meteor scatter should be open. For the tropoheads, check out William Hepburn's forecast page. Good luck, and don't feed the roaming bear in the north end.

I picked up what sounded like KOIN 6's audio on 87.7 on my GE Super Radio earlier (compared it with KIRO-TV, with only a 1 second delay between the two). Also heard a country station rapidly fading in and out on 103.1 as a jet getting ready to land at Sea-Tac was flying over. I thought it may have been KNBQ bleeding over but there was different music playing. After looking online I think it might have been KRSB from Eugene, unless there's some other country station on 103.1 nearby.

Today's updates

8:05AM
93.7: CJJR with brief bursts of Keith Urban's "Sweet Thing", maybe KANY? If yes, then its my first logging of Bigfoot 93.7!
95.3: Virgin Radio
96.9: KGY and brief bursts of another station ('LG FM)
92.9: weaker KISM
91.1: KPLU translator from Mt. Vernon (I had the antenna just right, and heard it. First logging of 'PLUs translator of Mt. Vernon in a long time!)

3:54PM
93.7: JR FM weaker
94.5: KMIH translator weaker

3:57-4:13PM
93.7: JR FM weak
95.3: mix of three stations. Virgin Radio Vancouver, Mary-Chapin Carpenter's "Down at The Twist and Shout" (maybe KXXK, maybe KXLE, more likely KXXK because of mountains), and here's a weird one. Lots of soft rock songs (Pocket Full of Sunshine, Michael McDonald, others), with no ID except for one: New ???. Who is this? XM or Sirius transmitter? Weird thing with CKZZ, or is it E-skip? Strong 5/10 with Nickelback music, then faded out to Virgin (or was it Virgin?) with a poor 2/10 signal.

UPDATE-4:39PM

Trying another (kinda crappy) TV, a 5' B&W one, faint stuff on 2, and low hum again on 3. E-skip? CBUT on 2?

-crainbebo

Antenna pointing: NE
