Tropo Hotspots

I know that where I live is a tropo non-hotspot...

But from what I've read, the tropo zone from California to Hawaii is fairly consistent, to where 2 meter hams take advantage of it when it's strong.

Thirty years ago when I lived in Hawaii (on Kauai), if I was out driving late at night, I would listen to KFI in Los Angeles, which played music then. (It was even preset on the car radio!) I'm an L.A. native, so it was a little touch of home from 2500 miles away. Winter nights were better than summer nights for DX-ing KFI.

I also liked listening to KDEO-AM 940 in Waipahu (a suburb of Honolulu) which was a country station then, but at night, KFRE-AM 940 in Fresno would sometimes walk all over it.

I had the opportunity to experience tropo in the Gulf of Mexico last week. I know this is a common tropo area. Since I live in Ohio, I don't have much opportunity to experience tropo like I did last week when I was on a cruise ship. My location was the extreme western tip of Cuba at the top of the ship, and I was consistently receiving many south Florida FMs and AMs like 92.7, 101.7, and 104.1 from the Keys, 93.9 Miami, 103.9 Fort Myers, 1300 Marathon and 1200 Fort Myers. The distances ranged from 250-400 miles. The path was all water.

KDUX 104.7 Aberdeen and KSWW 102.1 come in almost 24/7 at my relative's house in Marysville. Roughly 100 mi from a 300 foot hill. Maybe it is a tropo hotspot as KKCW K103 also comes in.

I got what might be a tropo hotspot for y'all...

Back in the 1990's in the Summer, I used to ride through the Nevada, Missouri area with my family going to see cousins who lived up near Kansas City. It may just be some kind of fluke or something, but just about everytime near the Nevada area, we'd get Little Rock, Arkansas stations on the FM radio in the car! I'm pretty sure that LR is at least 300+ miles from Nevada. I live near the Arkansas border and certainly don't get any LR here, ever.

I haven't been back to Nevada since then, so I don't know how consistent it is or if them times were just freak occurances, but back then, it sure struck me as plumb weird/awesome! I'll never forget it.
