Tropo on the Gulf Coast (AL/FL border area) - finally!

For the first time in ages, I've actually caught some good tropo down here on the Alabama Gulf Coast. I'm about halfway between Mobile and Pensacola. This season's been pretty dead for me; either conditions have been poor this year or I've been having bad luck finding the right time to listen.

Either way, tonight was a pleasant surprise; at one point around 1:30 this morning, there wasn't a single empty channel on the entire FM dial on my little Grundig G8! A lot of regulars came in, but I also got some new entries and some stations that I rarely hear. The G8 really outdoes itself with rejection and sensitivity. Here's the highlights, by region:

Atlanta:

I've never logged Atlanta/Athens on FM before tonight from the coast.

WFSH 104.7 Athens, GA CCM - usually I hear WZZK Birmingham after dark. This is a new one, and was very steady for about 20 minutes. (audio ID)

Montgomery:

WAPR 88.3 - APR/NPR (matched // WHIL Mobile)
WLWI 92.3 - Country (audio ID) - new log and a great catch, considering I have a Class C3 nearby on 92.1 and a 250 watt translator on 92.5 in my backyard!
WKXX 96.7 - Urban (audio ID/RDS)
WBAM 98.9 - Country (audio ID)
WHYY 101.9 - Top 40 (audio ID)

Selma:

I've never logged Selma on FM before tonight.

98.5 WINL - Country // WDXX - Heard clearly despite Class C on 98.7 near Pensacola and C2 or 3 on 98.3 in Mobile.
100.1 WDXX - Country // WINL - Now simulcasting with WINL, with Kix Brooks radio show. (audio ID)
100.9 WALX - Variety Hits (audio ID "Alex FM")

Dothan:

Not unusual to hear it, but unusual to get this many stations!

88.7 - WRWA - TPR/NPR - first adj. to another class C locally, new log!
93.7 - WDBT - Talk - Coast to Coast AM, mono (audio ID)
94.3 - WIZB - CCM - new log, another first adj. to strong local class C
95.5 - WTVY - Country - much stronger than usual (audio ID)
96.9 - WDJR - Hot AC - much stronger than usual, alone on channel
99.7 - WOOF - Country - first adj. to local class C (noticing a trend?)

Louisiana:

89.3 - WRKF - Baton Rouge - NPR (RDS)
90.7 - WWOZ - New Orleans - variety - strong tonight; did they build out their 100 kW permit?

Meridian, MS:

93.5 - WMLV - K-Love - (matched local K-Love affiliate)
97.1 - WOKK - country - (RDS)
101.3 - WJDQ - Top 40 - new log, against first adjacent on 101.5 with HD sideband wiped completely out.

Jackson:

Lots of new stuff!

87.75 - WJMF-LP - audio of LPTV on channel 6, playing oldies/80s music. (legal ID) - My first LPTV DX log!
93.9 - WJAI - Air 1 - (audio ID) new log
95.5 - WHLH - gospel - (audio ID) new log
96.3 - WUSJ - country - against local first adj. class c (audio ID)
102.9 - WMSI - country - against local first adj. class C (audio ID)
105.1 - WJDX - oldies - (audio ID)

Hattiesburg:

105.5 - WABO - AC - Waynesboro, MS - new log from the Hattiesburg general area!

Also of note was hearing the Supertalk Mississippi outlets on these stations:

97.3 - WFMM Sumerall/Hattiesburg
102.1 - WRQO Monticello
103.3 - WZKR Decatur/Meridian

Strange that their newest station, 103.1 WOSM Ocean Springs, was totally missing this morning despite being my closest Supertalk affiliate by far. I believe it runs Phil Hendrie instead of C2Cam due to rights issues.

"So much for going to sleep this morning!" ;D
