Tropo that skips

I read about someone in NJ and MA picking up stations from Florida on tropo.

Would the entire east coast have been able to pick up the Florida stations, or does it only hit certain areas at a time? For example, someone got 101.9 WJHM from Orlando in NJ, there are a lot of 101.9s between NJ and Orlando, why wouldn't those be favored?

I was the one who received WMNF, WWRM, WHTQ, and WJRR via tropo early on Sunday morning. The way tropo works, is that it can "duct" to certain areas, similar to e skip sometimes. However, usually everywhere in between the 2 locations, people will also have tropo, but it may not be to the exact same areas. Also, with the highly directional antennas some of us have, we can sometimes swing the antenna, and find different stations, depending on how strong they all are.

This map is a good indicator of the tropo that is actually happening.

Hepburn's map may be accurate in some areas, but rarely seems to be here in the northeast.

Great catches. Interesting you hrd some Tampa stations, as I listened Sunday morning and beaming NE I got a few "regular" Charleston, SC area stations. There seemed to be a trough from here to Brunswick, GA with almost all their locals hrd here and 2 of them over locals! Had some Raligh and Wilmington, NC Saturday.

Yes, it was quite the opening... all night long (Saturday) I had been getting stations from NJ, DE, VA, and NC. Then all of of a sudden right around when I was going to call it quits for the night, myself and another DXer about 10 miles NE of me started hearing urban music on 88.5. Both of us were in shock when the (live!) DJ came on saying it was WMNF. I even had them with RDS, which you can somewhat see in an unfortunately out of focus video that I took while it was happening.

Wow!

Congrats on that catch of WMNF.

I'm in Tampa, so I'd say that's one fantastic catch from all the way up there!

:)
