TROPO TIME !

Driving on Cape Cod.. 103.5 - initially heard hip hop music. Presume it was WKTU in NYC. Then heard an ad for "Sun Toyota" on a Country Music station. Turns out I was listening to a station in Clearwater, Florida. I love this stuff ! Stations were fading in and out - super strong, then static - not a solid steady signal.

Well... in fact it was "e-skip"! While driving to work last night, I was getting quite a few DX FM's from Missouri around 9:00 PM. One really strong signal was KNEO 91.7 ("The Word") in Neosho, MO running USA Radio Network News. Also got a news talk station on 97.1, more than likely it was "97.1 FM Talk" (KFTK) from the St. Louis area. Ah, I love e-skip!!

20 miles north of Saratoga Springs, NY rather than local 91.1-WSPN, I was instead receiving 100,000 watt 91.1-WKNO, Memphis, Tn......

It's always funny how people on these boards keep experiencing different forms of DX, and almost always call it the opposite of what it is. Just remember if it's very strong signals that come up all of a sudden, and are approximately 1000 miles away, it's E Skip.

I always get this wrong. Wichita, Kansas was blasting into Framingham/Wayland on my evening commute; I picked up 96.3 KZCH, 97.1 KIBB, 97.9 KRBB, and 102.1 KZSN. Is that e-skip?

Yes, and it's actually still going on right now.

Re: E slop time!

and it's still going on right now-3 confirmations: From Northbridge MA (15 mi S of Worcester, MA)
89.3 the Current from Northfield MN (near Minneap)
91.7 KNSW Marshall MN
93.9 KIAI Mason City IA-a real toughie between locals 93.7 and 94.1
I'm sure there's more right now.. Got these on an old Bose Wave radio.

Friend of mine once picked up WBCS 96.9 (now WTKK), country at the time, up in Wisconsin

I picked up, in the past:
--NPR station from Carbondale IL running Whad Ya Know

--some CBC stations on FM

--a station from Ocean City MD

--WPCC 91.7 "Pensacola Christian College", while at Salem State (back when WMWM turned off
transmitter when there was no DJ--there was WPCC, picked up at an SSC parking lot), Now WEGS

--when in Lynn, talk radio from Philly--WWDB 96.5...1990s

--couple yrs ago in Essex MA, on a late Sat morning in late Aug: WQXR 96.3, NYC

I could get fringes of WPRO 92.3 from Providence, Rhode Island in Exeter, New Hampshire in a Hockey Rink parking lot a few weeks back.

However, in the same parking lot last weekend, 92.3 was all static and couldn't get one fringe of WPRO 92.3

As many skiers know, the rule of thumb is that the temperature drops
approximately 2 degrees for every 1000 feet that one goes up, vertically.
If you have a very thick cloud cover, the warmer area can be trapped below,
closer to the ground, creating a temperature inversion, highly favorable
for DX'ing. Throw in an overall favorable sunspot cycle, and the whole
propagation scenario just goes NUTS!

This Is What I Got On July 28th In Sandown, NH

93.3 - Unidentified Hip-Hop Station
94.1 - Unidentified Classic Rock/Classic Hits Station Fighting With Jazz Station WSJT-FM In Lakeland, FL
96.5 - WHTQ From Orlando Florida Fighting With Local Station 96.5 The Mill
98.1 - WNUE-FM From Orlando, FL
98.3 - Unidentified Oldies Station
101.5- WSOL-FM Jacksonville, FL
101.9 - Hip Hop Station I Imagine WJHM-FM Orlando, FL
104.7 - WRBQ-FM Tampa, FL
105.1 - WOMX-FM Orlando, FL
105.9 - WOCL-FM Orlando, FL
107.7 - Unidentified Rock Station

I got that same 98.3 coming down the Longfellow Bridge out of Cambridge one summer afternoon too with no interference from Boston's 98.5. It's Oldies 98.3 from the Savannah area. Seems like the window to the Jacksonville area was open for you. If you get one known station from a certain area, chances are the other big signals will be there too. My summer "windows" have included Lake Charles, LA, Birmingham, AL, and the border area of SD/MN (fireworks ad from North Dakota just before the 4th!)

I think your oldies station might be Big 98.3, WGCO Midway, GA. It has a huge signal from Savannah to Jacksonville, I remember listening to it when I drove to Florida.

93.3 was probably the CHR WFLZ out of Tampa.

The Classic Rock or Rock station you heard on 94.1 bleeding in could have been good old WHJY in Providence.

Providence was coming in quite well on my clock radio the other night as well.

I was getting WCOD 106.1 from the Cape clearly here in Saco Maine and right next to local WHXQ 106.3 and WFCC was beating on WFNK.
