Tropo today to Oregon 7/2/13

Humidity is high, so Tropo is fair-good to Oregon this morning.

104.7 - KDUK Florence, OR 250mi "My Hits Right Now K-Duck" mixing with KDUX Aberdeen, WA 95mi
107.1 - KRQT Castle Rock, WA 117mi Rocket 107
101.9 - KINK Portland, OR 160mi
103.3 - KKCW Beaverton, OR 160mi + KWLN Wilson Creek, WA at times with SS 140mi
102.1 - KSWW Montesano, WA 90mi strong at times

I am no surprised given the heat and the change in the weather. I can't get KKCW, all I get is the KMTT translator. Oddly, no sign of KSWW here on the IPod radio either, just KPQ-FM. I did pick up KJET by accident earlier overpowering CBU-FM. I do wonder why KPLZ puts out so much more splatter than most of the other stations on the dial? Oddly, no CHQM-FM. Eugene is a different story though, KWPZ was strong as a rimshot, KAFE and KISM were clear as locals, KAFE was even in and out of HD! We also got CBU-FM, KLMY, KLDR, and a few others.

I was listening to Eugene and noted KWPZ 106.5 very strong. CJJR 93.7 with a song match, 92.9 with a possible KISM u/ the Cottage Grove KKNU translator, 94.1 KMPS, 97.3 KIRO, 97.7 KOMO like a local best ever, 102.9 KYNW (KNBQ) Centralia best ever with RDS (!), 103.5 CHQM with a song match and 604 area code, 99.7 KLMY, 98.1 KING, and even 1200 watt KLWA 101.3 Westport (K-LOVE). CJJR and CHQM are combined as "best-ever" distance logs at 359 miles from Eugene.

Later on I was checking a recording I made while I was out for a few minutes (from Eugene) and guess what? "Today's Soft Favorites, Warm 106.9" into Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like a Bird"! 250 mile DX right there.

Hmm, you and I must have been listening at very different times in the opening. Findx and I had CBU-FM and CHQM-FM in. On 106.5, you would have thought KWPZ came out of Corvallis or something, not quite strong enough to be like a local. We had 102.9 in like a local, KDDS with RDS, KISM like a local, and KAFE so strong that it was popping in and out of HD. We also had 101.3 in, but 93.7 was oddly blank, despite being able to pull in those Vancouver sticks and we even pulled in KLDR. Yes we did pull in KLMY as well. With those results, I'm a little disappointed in the home scan I took just a few minutes later, though got 3 new logs, KXL-FM, KWJJ, and KJET. I'm a little surprised that CFOX and CBUF were new logs for you the other day, I had them in two years ago in a tropo opening.

Well out here in Monroe, KDDS and KOMO are strong signals. Go out toward your QTH and CBUF starts to come in, but CFOX is rare until you hit Marysville or Everett. KDDS is just way too strong.

I'm also surprised the Eugene receiver had KLDR. I thought that was a "no-DX area" due to blockage from mountains. Maybe not. One of these days my dream of hearing KCMX 101.9 over KINK will come true here...

Yes those are strong signals, I haven't been able to log Vancouver since I switched from my BrailleNote to my iPod. I want to be able to hear KTMT, I don't quite understand why Mapleton streams Spokane and some of their other stations but not Medford, companies that do that are kind of annoying. Maybe another one for the thread over on Off The Air.

I picked up CHWF 106.9, CHPQ 99.9, CFCP 98.9 and CKLR 97.3 CLEARLY over KRWM, KISW, KLCK and KIRO-FM respectively yesterday. They usually drift in or out weakly on best days.

I don't think there's any real "no-DX area" (or at least one that can escape tropo and e-skip.) Even areas where there are no local FM signals and too far out of range for higher powered city stations and blocked geographically by mountains, I've heard some EXCELLENT catches

I was trying to say that picking up Medford from Eugene is hard as it is because of mountains blocking groundwave, so that would probably block tropo to Medford from Eugene. Tropo from Medford or Es from Medford - probably yes.

I've gotten KFFM at Snoqualmie Pass - as well as CIOC 98.5 Victoria IIRC. It's been 3 years since I've gone up there.

In the early-mid '80s, I used to pick up KWIQ-FM, KFFM and KATS regularly in Lynnwood. As well as KPQ-FM.

And KPQ is still a regular, today, in Lynnwood and Bothell. Still comes in, spotty, but I can hear "The Quake" fairly around Western Washington.

I copied KWIQ and KFFM at Hood Canal last week. Plus an E-skip opening to Nebraska and South Dakota as well as several other western states. You can see my results on the DX and Reception page.
