Tropo Tunnel report

Hello to all, today I want to report on some tropo tunneling going on around houston. Today I was by Greens Rd and Veterans Memorial ( NORTH HOUSTON) and I was able to pick up 3 stations I believe they all came from Dallas. One was 106.3 and it had a hip hop format, but the song was mentioning God I guess it was a religious station. But when I went to google the frecuencie the only close on to that format was WSRB from LANSING IL! The other two were definitely from Dallas one was KBOC 98.3 Fm I think its called EL NORTE and its the same guy from La RAza here in houston. And the other was a hip hop station on 104.5 fm its called K104..
 
Over in Friendswood, I was picking up 106.1, 104.5, 95.1 in Beaumont. I was also getting Aggie 96.1, WACO 99.9 over KSHN. Gator 99.5 was fighting 99.5 KISS and i managed to pick up Mix 97.3 in Louisiana.
 
In the KKHT controlroom, our monitor was receiving 100.7 The Word, not KKHT, the one in Dallas, KWRD. Of course, if you are a rimshot with studios on the southwest side of Houston, it's expected to happen.
 
That 104.5 you picked up is KKDA/Dallas-Ft.Worth. Good report, mr.texmex. I've picked up the usual suspects during this tropo, however I came across a suspicious station at 105.9. It is playing hip-hop, commercial free, and unfortunately I couldn't wait long enough for an ID....work beckoned. Is this KUZN/Centerville? If so, it would be the first time I've heard it on the air in over 2 years. It has remained an open carrier with no audio since the fine folks at Aleluya purchased it.

I don't believe I've ever recieved KWRD at 100.7, Chuck. Surprising to me that KASE/Austin didn't make an impact on your control room. KASE is the culprit 9 times out of 10 for me when it comes to interference with KKHT.

Actually, I've heard both of them. KASE would come in more often KWRD. When this happens, I would say KWRD would come in like that about 10% of the time.

Lana Joseph who was on the air, came running into my office telling me ENCO was playing two different playlists, because she was hearing KKHT and KWRD back and forth in the monitor. As soon as I heard it, I knew exactly what was happening. She assumed another playback was left up and airing. With ENCO, you have to make sure that doesn't happen. Sometimes an operator will load the 2nd playback to check a playlist for the next day or a previous day. If you just click it off, it will be gone from the screen, but it will still be able to air. The additional ENCO playback has to be unloaded 1st or this can happen. She checked the additional playbacks and found them to be clear. I explained to her about this tropo effect.
 
Speaking of Radio Aleluya I went to Livingston last weekend and 102.5 fm is supposed to be Radio Aleluya aswell. But that wasnt the case, it was magic 102.5 fm
 
Last night I had 92.5 KOMA-FM from Oklahoma City fighting with Lake Charles in the Galleria. Caught both the weather forecast and top of hour from OKC.

Also caught part of a spot for a "gentleman's club" in the "metroplex" where the featured attraction was a midget stripper while my tuner was on 92.5. I'd say that Dallas is as classy as ever.

KHMX 96.5 made the trip up here early Saturday morning. Didn't hear KOMA but two other OKC stations made it out here as well.

(I'm 30 miles northwest of Nashville)

Another listener 60 miles southeast of here heard Austin -- and caught a Nashville translator translating 101.9 from San Antonio instead of the station in Clarksville, Tenn. it's supposed to relay...

That must have been nerve racking for her until you explained the circumstances involved. I noticed something like this with Biz Radio one morning. 1110 KTEK came on the air and was a mere second or two behind KJSA/Mineral Wells. It sounded like I was in a ballpark until both stations broke for ID's and local spots. Then I realized what was happening. I can't imagine what kind of havoc the new KVTT at 50kw is going to reek on KTEK once it comes online.

I was playing around with a yagi the other day and pointed it towards Austin - KASE overides the "local" 100.7 easily in the West side of Houston. Too bad it is now country and of no interest. Bob-FM was downright strong. I didn't get any out of town HD signals, though. In the late 70's KASE would make it to Midland with a good antenna and tuner setup, but their beautiful music format was also of little interest.
 
Bob is indeed strong, probably the strongest of all the Austin Metro sticks. Even when it was KEYI, I can remember it being really strong. One that used to be a regular here in Houston that isn't so much anymore is KROX. Used to be a regular this way, but it is hard to pick up 101X these days.
