Tropospheric Ducting

I have had some interesting skips from American stations from my listening post in Central Mexico. My strangest: KJTH, Ponca City, OK, "House FM." In a period of 2 weeks, I was able to pick up the station on 89.7 FM twice, once on a Saturday at 5:52 PM, for a period of 40 minutes, and another time, last Wednesday at 8:30 CST for 10 minutes. I called the CE who told me that he had received complaints a week prior to my call from people in the coverage area informing him of a Dallas FM coming in on the frequency.

What seems to strange to me is that this phenomena is typically seen in the summer time, not in the winter, and to pick up the same station twice in two weeks? Weird. Anybody ever experienced something similar?

In the south, warm air masses can cause tropo. There is tropo on the Gulf coast probably every week in winter.

I think you may have actually heard sporadic-E propagation. There have been several such openings reported lately between the southern U.S. and various areas in Mexico. They *are* unusual in February!

I think it's just chance that you heard the same station twice. There are weeks in the summer when I see KENW-TV every day!

How far are you from the Gulf of Mexico?

This is the time of year when the tropo is just getting started here. It sometimes is a constant thing from day to day and I remember when I had the TV with the rabbit ears only, the co-channel interference would be there even during the middle of the afternoon. At night and early morning, it was so bad some local stations were impossible to watch.
