TROPOSPHERIC INTERFERENCE

Happy Springtime! It's that time for weird skips and massive interference:

Hits us really hard on 105.9. We got a call this morning as we were booming into Beaumont, TX, as Island 106 from Panama City, FL was killing us here on the MS Coast...

Cool. Last night I couldnt get my FM transmitter in another room because of another station. Every frequency had something on it. I was trying to send slacker to my radios in the house. Glad to see that site btw.

I have been getting some stations from the Selma and Montgomery, Ala Area to Forest overnight and it has been bleeding over the signal of K-love (WJXN-FM) and a few other stations on the dial.

for the last few mornings I've been picking up KTEK 56 in Tyler, TX. KARN 14 in Monroe, LA, KTBS 3 in Shreveport on my HDTV.
I've also picked up KSLA 12 Shreveport and KNOE in Monroe in high definition also. I still can't get WRBJ in Magee unless I get out and turn the antenna. I used to always pickup WABG 6, but haven't had a reliable signal on that station in years. It could be interference from nearby WMPR, or WJSU. Since going digital I've never caught WABG however I did pick up WXVT in digital a few weeks ago, which I never did even in analog. WXVT is still in 480i.

As the previous poster said, this is either the best or the worst location, depending on whether you're an avid DX'er or a PD/GM/owner who's getting clobbered inside their primary market.

One of the best trop openings I ever heard was in May, 1991. I had just moved to approximately 20 miles NW of Ocala, Florida. Solid duct to the Gulf Coast. The big Mobile/Pensacola and New Orleans FMs were completely overriding the locals. WABB, WRNO, WJLQ, WEZB, etc., could all be heard with local strength.

The best one was...and Wayne, you'll love this...by positioning the antenna on my Sangean ATS-803A just right, I could hear WQID! Pretty impressive, considering that 93.7 in Ocala (then WMMZ) was 100kW @ over 1300 feet from less than 25 miles away!

I'm advised WABG's analog signal went off a few days ago.

Yesterday, I heard 99.5 out of New Orleans as I was riding through the Fondren area of Jackson, despite being next to 99.7 WJMI on the dial.

A couple of weeks ago, 103.5 from Memphis was booming in my car stereo. That was my first time picking them up that far south. I've picked them up in Starkville, but not never in Jackson until then.

If the forecast maps are correct, it'll break open again mid-to-late week.

You are correct sir. lots of stations stepping all over themselves this morning. WOAD FM was completely drown out by some station called Kicks 106. heard lots of stuff from the delta, meridian, baton rouge etc.

Television was another matter. WLBT and WAPT digital were getting stepped on because they were cutting out. I ran the channel scan and picked up the following from Rankin County

KSTR Dallas, KTAQ Dallas, KSLA Shreveport, KDFW Dallas, KTBS Shreveport, WPXD Dallas. all in digital. Plus tons of subchannels

On the analog side it was mostly too much stuff at once but I did see a handful of spanish language stations. My guess would be from Texas, which is the direction everything seems to come from. I didn't turn my antenna so there may have been more in the other direction.

The Kicks 106 would be my local here in Memphis.

Jackson, MS to Dallas is a good haul for DTV -- almost 400 miles. Not bad at all.

I am sure Texas is a very common path. You will also see a lot of Florida where you are when the band opens like that. The band may open again tonight/tomorrow where you are (or, it might not); you may see stuff from SE, too.

Last night I was picking up a Disco station on 92.7 out of corpus cristi tx. I thought I was in a time warp. Is there actuall Disco stations across the country. Also picked up San Antonio and Mobile-Pensacola. From Livingston La

How about the Texas Night train on XERF 1570, John Landecker (boogie check!) on WLS, or the "Birdman" on WERC 960

Somewhere, I have a tape that I recorded of XERF in October, 1982. "I'm Johnny Knight with ya...on radio station XXXXXX ERF....radio station XXXXXX ERF! Fifteen-Seventy on your AM dial. And this is.....NIGHTFLIGHT!" He was promoting free T-shirts, giving a Post Office Box in Los Angeles as the address to mail to. (I did, but never received a shirt.)

The signal was loud, strong, and completely dominant on the frequency. I was listening in MINNESOTA! No trace of the Canadian stations on 1570 underneath.

So, I'm guessing this was back when XERF was still running 250kW (?)
