Trouble at WRNS?

My last post prompted a few calls from friends. After I informed them what was going on they told me that others may want to know as well. So here is the scoop. This info is from a dear friend of mine who knows Johnny Law well so I'm sure that it is accurate. It seems that ever since the latest trends came out a couple of weeks ago PD and morning show vet Wayne Carlyle is putting the squeeze on Johnny to totally change his mid-day delivery. Although it is not entirely clear as to why it may have a lot to do with Wayne's ego! Johnny's numbers have been going up ever since he started at WRNS. But it is not until the recent trends that Johnny's numbers dominated not only PM and nights but mornings as well. Check the trends. Mornings are pulling a 9.8 and mid-days a 13.0 in P25-54. Mornings are down and mid-days are up. To make matters worse Johnny's 12+ numbers went up as did his 18+ to a 14.0. Oh, I forgot to mention that Wayne pulled Johnny in his office and told him to "stop being so morning show." Still think it is anything but Wayne's ego?

I've listened to Johnny. Okay, so he is not the typical mid-day jock. With numbers like his who cares? He has a lot of fun on the air. Nice delivery, frequent interaction with his listeners, and a great voice. Johnny's totally confused on what to do when he returns from vacation on Dec. 20. Will he tame it down or turn it up? I guess we'll have to tune in to find out.

I've been in the business almost 22 years and my advice to you Johnny is to stay the way you are. If Wayne decides to poop on you like he did Jeff Hackett I'll hire you. Just bring your audience and numbers with ya!

It's really a shame that every time you hire talent to make a difference someone
tries to undermine them, when will those in radio ever learn to work together and
quit complaining?, If you are achieving good numbers, the station's management
should be pleased, but there are those who want constant attention, which is why
many have left this business, can't we all get along?

The sound of WRNS coming across on the speakers sounds like they are broadcasting from a remote location. Is something messed up with their processing and sound?

I don't know, but i agree with your observation, someone in the NextMedia's
engineering department needs to get on this right away.

Guess the jig and gig is up for Carlyle. He left RNS last week and starts on 107.9 Monday. Any bets on how long that lasts? They've had four morning show changes in the short period since Jerry Wayne's passing. I'm grabbing my popcorn and pulling up a seat...

WOW. NextMedia must have really done something he didn't like... he's been there for 20 years at least.

107.9 though - that's an odd one. I can't imagine him with anything but country music.

I think Wayne & Donna will make a good team... Both are talented and pros..Donna is a great Co-worker and a good person....I worked with Wayne a few years back and he treated me very well and since he has been in the building he is still very nice to me personally. That's all I can say....He may slaughter small farm animals when I'm not around but he seems fine to be around...I look forward to listening with one ear while I'm on the air on 1070....Plus I am a professional kiss ass so I think all will be fine..Whenever I see Wayne I have on a Yankees shirt and immediately start humming Hail to The Redskins so I fully expect to see a little something extra in my next paycheck....I hope you like my post Mr. Carlyle sir....

Allen ;D

All of us have to have a little ego to be in radio...Like I said I think all will be fine...We all have to roll with the flow because it ain't like years ago when you could get pissed, leave a station and get a job across town...There are no more across town jobs because the same few companies own all the sandboxes so we gotta learn to play well with others and I believe Wayne & Donna will develope a nice chemistry over time because again they are both pros and adults...

I didn't think about the fact that Wayne will be the new PD at 107.9. Hopefully he'll get rid of the awful tagline (the motown....blah blah blah...) and imaging and tighten the playlist up a bit.

Is he also VP/Prog for this market? IIRC Jerry Wayne held that position.

Don't know...I'm sure you'll see some new stuff as we get into Spring and Summer....Changing the format to Adult/Alternative Polka would be my first move or maybe Industrial Opera..Two big holes in the market...

So how long after the debut will their tagline be changed to "Motown, Soul & Great Ego"?

A rimshot for the "Unknown Comic"! :D

Maybe Carlyle can hone and refine the nightly evening feature into "The Control Fix At Six." ::)

By the way, am I the only one who sees the irony in them bringing in another person named Wayne to their morning show?

If you look at the rating numbers for Greenville/New Bern/Jacksonville, you will notice a "0.0" next to WRNS
and other stations owned by "NextMedia", it's because they subscribe to a different ratings provider and
explains why.

Arbitron only released the ratings for subscribers; the rest default to 0 on radio-info.com's showing. (Most other trades simply don't show them at all...)
