Trouble for WWPR?

Anyone Check out the Arbs that just Came out for NYC? Looks Like HOT97 has regained a significant lead over Power105.1 In fact power Has had one of it's lowest books since they launched and Dropped almost 1 full share since 2 books ago. Will Power keep trying to Wing it with a Morning Show or will they finally give in and pipe in a syndicated show?

What syndicated urban shows are left that are any good? Steve Harvey is tied up at BLS plus he's more 25-54, there really are none left. Russ Parr? Garbage, Tom Joyner? boring and skews Urban AC. Anyway isnt New York the market that syndicates shows to OTHER parts of the country?.lol..They cant run a syndicated show from a smaller market, Bob and Tom have wanted to be In NYC for a while now. If they're smart, they wait till after the first of the year and bring back Star, Listen if O and A can come back after what THEY did?..........

More than that, the sum of the two Churbans is down by several share points, with no discernable beneficiary station. While Hot is up a bit, Power is down considerably more.

Doug Banks does better than Egypt and Ashy. Star would be Back on Hot97 before being rehired from What's left of CC Neither place is really an option for him.

Rap Is Dying Out?

Could it be that Hip-Hop has seached its climax? The ratings are down and I'm reading and hearing that Rap's primary consumers who were White youths are now turning to Rock.

If this is true, then Hip-Hop will fade into history just like how the Doo Wop sound died out.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Hip hop has been past it's Climax for a while now. It may die down but I don't think it will ever die out .

That old saying that Hip Hop is going to die , is so 70's crap . Hip Hop haters been saying this , ever since hip Hop got starded .Like or hate it ," HIP HOP LIVE'S 4 EVER" !

so true.... Hip Hop has been out for over 25 years

I don't think that if WWPR is struggling, it is because of hip-hop losing popularity. My opinion is that a lot of hip-hop is superficial and similar sounding these days, but there is some good stuff on the charts as well (Lupe Fiasco and The Game are among the better acts out there today).

If one of NYC's hip-hop stations struggle, it's because one would be hard-pressed to find any differences between the two stations. Both seldom ever play anything that came out before 1996, and both take a lot of liberties with the format by playing Pop acts such as Cassie and Justin Timberlake. The fault lies not with the format, but with the execution. WWPR needs to take a different approach to their format if they have any chance of staying relevant to the market. I recommend going strictly hip-hop (as in, dumping the crossover Pop/R&B acts) and playing everything from Sugar Hill Gang, Kurtis and Grandmaster Flash to current acts and everything in between. This is what Power 105 has to do if they want any chance of catching Hot 97.

Yup - thats what the set them apart before - their "back in the day joints"... Right now - with all this Southern rap thast coming out, it would be nice to hear more classic hip hip since the new ------ sucks. They shouldnt lose Justin and Nelly Furtado though - Pop music is big right now and since Hip Hop isnt as strong right now with crossover hits, they need to play Timberlake and others. They should maybe also do a "back in the day weekend"... Hip Hop is 25 years old now and if there is one place where a Classics Hip Hop station would do well is here in NYC.

If Hip Hop doesn't evolve beyond its persistently nihilistic message of "women aren't anything but whores" or "get rich or die tryin", then it's going to find itself where punk rock was by 1979 with its own nihilistic message of "there's no future and England's dreamin" being shunned by the music buying publc. Punk rock though managed to evolve and become "post-punk" or new wave music that continues to influence even the musicians of today (the Killers, My Chemical Romance).

All this coming from someone who probably doesn't listen to hip hop music at all

Actually, I was extremely fortunate to have come of age at a time when Hip Hop was at its creative peak (ie the late '80s and early '90s), and I own CDs by acts like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr and the Jungle Brothers that I still listen to quite frequently. What I *Don't* listen to is anything having to do with so-called "Gangsta Rap", where virtually all of the nihilism in Hip Hop is concentrated.

Haa! I bought the, very hard to find, 3-cd Grandmaster Flash, "Adventures on the Wheels of Steel" box set from Amazon and I am in heaven.
I place it on shuffle with Sugarhill Gang's Greatest Hits, Run D' MC's Gretest Hits, Whodini's Greatest Hits, Ice T and Cube's Greatest Hits and it is a good driving day.
