Trouble in Paradise - News92

I hope it's not related to moderating Geoff Berg's debate on his Partisan Gridlock show on Friday. Could the guest appearance on KPFT have something to do with it? Scott never mentions Berg's Friday afternoon show on KPFT, just his website.

I have a lot of respect for Ed Shane, but I have only been able to deduce that he got at least some of the hires wrong at News92. While I was happy to hear J. P. and Lana back on-the-air, the writing has been nothing short of bad. I guess they went in under-budgeted and spent the bulk on the morning news on-air team, and had to settle for less than major market quality ND, and editors and writers. i know a major market (San Francisco and Chicago) radio anchor/reporter/ND wanting to come to Houston, if RO is interested.

It's radio one, they are ALWAYS under budgeted

Based on this report, if I were the GM, I would have made the same call.

As much as I enjoy listening to Scott, I think he used poor judgement in not seeking management's permission to go on the air at a competing radio station (even a nonprofit station which does compete for listeners' attention) and airing something which was the compensated work product of his employer. Could they have given him a warning rather than an immediate firing?...possibly--but I learned a long time ago not to pass judgement without knowing all the facts...

I bet that if he mentioned News 92 somewhere, they may have not fired him but maybe take less severe action (or commended him for taking "initiative" and probably enjoy new listeners tuning in to check out Geoff's debates on his Tuesday morning show and getting hooked on that radio station).

He made a really stupid mistake and got canned, pretty much end of the story. I listened to him and for a station that claims "No spin" he had a decided left lean to most of his guest and comments. I thought he was a very weak link for them. So far everything but mornings leaves me cold.

I think part of the problem is that KROI has promoted itself as "no spin" news. They work at reporting the news straight down the middle, with no spin to the right or to the left, and I think that's an admirable objective.

Did Braddock really think his bosses wouldn't mind if he made an appearance on the far-left Pacifica station, identified as an anchor on KROI, and using interview material that was prepared for use on KROI?

Did he really think it would have no effect on what his KROI listeners think of his views? Is his judgement really that impaired? I would have fired him too.

I like Scott Braddock. That being said, you don't appear on another radio station, commercial or not, without permission. Imagine Dave Ward taking an interview from ABC 13 over to Houston PBS and appearing on a show without the knowledge of his employer. Come on Scott~! On the other hand, this seems kind of heavy handed by Radio One. Perhaps they will reconsider.

If you sign on with an outfit like KROI, you wear their brand. Appearing on another station's talk show, right or left, implies the first station's endorsement of the other station. When you're trying to get a new format off the ground, you don't let your talent go running around the market appearing on other stations. It confuses the listeners because they can't tell who the personality really belongs to.

Scott doesn't have a left lean but he has a friend as a recurring guest to represent the view of the left.  He was actually acting as the moderator for Geoff's debate.  Geoff probably had a client's court date (he is a criminal defense attorney, in case you don't listen to Partisan Gridlock) at that moment and asked his friend to cover for him (after Scott leaves work) except for a few minutes on the phone for the debate.

I agree it does seem to be a little heavy handed. A one-week suspension without pay would have been sufficient.

But, the ultimate punishment of termination seems to say there is more to the story that we haven't been told. Maybe there were internal bad relations or some other problem we don't know about, and the KPFT incident was just the final straw that broke the camel's back.

Anybody at News92 have the down-low 411 on this?

If they do know something, I hope they would keep it to themselves. It's really none of our business, and not talking about it shows more class.

Given I've listened to the station and his slot everyday since sign on I'd have to say from what I heard he had a left lean to his comments and his guest, you certainly are welcome to disagree.
