Troy Dungan's Retirement from WFAA

Apparently Steve didn't want to be Troy's replacement, at least according to today's Ft Worth Star-Telegram article quoting Troy...

Snippet on the why not Greg or Steve...

"...Many local-media watchers speculated that it meant that the other major players on Channel 8's weather team, longtime on-air personalities Greg Fields and Steve McCauley, were passed over for an outsider. But Dungan says there were no slights intended to the current team.

"Steve, to my mind, is the most brilliant meteorologist I've ever met," Dungan says. "And I thought he would be the guy. He did not want it; wouldn't touch it with a fork. He has his own private weather service, his own commercial company, and he likes to do what he does." ..."
 
It was great to see Iola, Verne and Tracy from the orginal team have some remarks about working with Troy tonight. I hope someone puts tonights broadcast up on youtube.
 
I got to see Troy's final weathercast firsthand at the studio...what a great sendoff to a classy guy. Even ex-WFAA weatherguy Neal Barton came by. That completed the 31-year arc for me, having seen the first Ch 8 weathercast of Troy's back on February 2, 1976. :'(

Oops, apparently Troy's first WFAA broadcast was July 26, 1976. Coulda sworn it was in February... ???
 
Channel 8 got this one right: a fitting so long for awhile to a most deserving individual. And as Troy, himself, said, he's not totally gone--just changing job assignments and slowing down a bit. He has earned it.
 
Glad to hear Troy reference his old buddy Chip Moody as well, and a clip of Chip and Gloria included amongst the video montage. Troy has always claimed to have a book's worth of Chip stories, but I never got to hear very many of them. I know I still miss the guy, and I can tell Troy does, too.
 
Was watching Troy's final forecast again this afternoon while clearing off the DVR and was very impressed by the way WFAA handled his last newscast. It was quite fitting. I too appreciated the tip of the hat to Chip Moody, as Mike Shannon said above.

Didn't catch Dan Henry on Fox-4 until the Viewers Voice segment Friday. That was a classy move.

On a side note, I was at the barber shop Saturday afternoon looking through The Dallas Morning News (I take the Star-Telegram at home) and noticed the WFAA weather team at the top of the page. Something just didn't seem right with "Chief Meteorologist" Pete Delkus and no Troy Dungan. That's going to take some getting used to!
 
A couple of musings:

1. Long live the memory of Chip, Tracy, Verne and Troy. Those were the good ol' days.
2. Pete, you can advertise your sculpted hair piece...er...hair do on all the DART buses in town. The only thing you will deliver is a broadcast. Heck, Steve Macauley is more passionate about the weather than you.
3. Dan Henry got mucho brownie points with that classy move. Check the blogs...
4. I did think it was humorous WFAA making it a point to call him 'legendary Texas FORECASTER' or even 'WEATHER PERSONALITY'. Without a meteorology degree, what else could they do. But to show you how great Troy was, no one cared until the day he "retired".

He will be missed. Question is: Who's the next great forecaster in town? Finfrock? eh.
