Troy Hayden Leaving Fox 10

What a stunner. One of the people I enjoyed at 10 when I watched it, though I didn't watch mornings. The timing (last week of June) is interesting, as I know there has been a buyout round at the Fox O&Os (some tenured people left Atlanta).

My guess? 15.

The only issue with 15 is that Scripps has been laying off anchors around the country, including the departures of Allison Rodriquez and Justin Pazera among others at 15. Would they really spend the $$$ for Troy Hayden.? A thirty year TV veteran is not cheap. Usually, I would have guesses but am really at a loss here (unless say Mark Curtis or Scott Pasmore are ready to retire).

I don't like to speculate, but the timing is just right before the Summer Olympics, where the local spotlight will be on Channel 12.

I don't know about the status of Channel 12 anchor team, but I think they could use a win/boost.

Good point.. An internet search shows Mark Curtis is 65 years old. He may want to retire or cut back on his hours.
I know it was brought up here Justin Pazera, who worked for ABC15 doing midday news, is now at 12News as reporter & who knows if they're going to prop him up to the desk anytime soon maybe at least as a 1PM anchor.

Mark Curtis is 65.
15 is set with Raml & Soto.
3 & 5 aren't looking to spend big money as their current anchors are set.
John Hook is not going anywhere at 10, so Troy moving to 12 makes the most sense in order to slide into a prestigious evening anchor slot.

Good assessment formeraa. 😐

I didn't watch Hayden very much, but I know he's highly respected in local AZ. journalism. Wishing him the best with his next move.

Goodykoontz's article mentions that he will be at his new station on August 1. There are two sides of this.

1. It's in the middle of the Summer Olympics, which I mentioned before.

-and-

2. It's the 30th anniversary of KNXV's first newscast.

Like I said before, I'm thinking more like the former than the latter.

2. It's the 30th anniversary of KNXV's first newscast.
This is probably not the best place to mention this, I think it deserves its own thread, but in May we passed the 30th anniversary of New World Communications buying 12 stations and converting them to Fox affiliates. This was big in the Detroit market because it left CBS without a major affiliate and CBS Detroit has been limping along every since. Reading articles, the Phoenix TV market blew up, with KPNX the only station that didn't switch.

For those who were around then, your thoughts?

It was a very strange time, for sure. The changes didn't happen overnight and occurred from, I believe, September 1994 to January 1995 as the affiliate agreements expired. First, KSAZ lost CBS to KPHO and ran crappy movies in prime time (along with their new "Arizona Prime News" at 9pm) before getting Fox. KPHO was formerly an independent and slowly ramped up their news operation when they picked up CBS. They started life as a CBS affiliate with only a 5 minute newscast at 10pm followed by Seinfeld reruns leading into Letterman! KTVK dropped ABC programming in phases (picked up by KNXV) over a few months before they were officially no longer an ABC affiliate. I believe Nightline and Good Morning America were the first to go as they introduced GMAZ and other expanded news programming. KNXV had just started a boutique 9pm newscast around the same time as the New World deal was announced and suddenly had to recalibrate to an ABC network quality news operation. KPNX stayed NBC and IIRC they benefited from the chaos at the other stations. For news, we went from 3 network quality (KSAZ, KTVK, KPNX), one very limited (KPHO), and one that was just born (KNXV) to five full service news departments in a very short time.

Corrections are welcome!

I wonder how things would have evolved if KTVK had been made the CBS affiliate instead of KPHO. They were at the top of their game when ABC and Scripps/KNXV pulled the rug out from under them.

Years ago KSAZ poached Syleste Rodriguez from Channel 12. Seems now they've returned the favor.
Arguably, 12 News did not know how to showcase Syleste's talent! I remember thinking at the time that it wasn't a huge loss for 12 News, despite KSAZ's ads. Getting Troy Hayden is a huge investment for TEGNA, who usually does not want to spend $$ these days (which I why I thought he was replacing Mark Curtis).

Who knows though...Troy could still replace Mark Curtis a couple of years down the road. This just may have been the opportune time to bring him onboard.

Interesting! Along with the job postings for Morning Meteorologist and Morning Traffic Anchor on the 12News website, I'd say that 12 News Today in AZ will undergo a MAJOR shakeup.
That's interesting considering in the past year, I know the current morning traffic anchor, Stella Sun, also got certified to be a meteorologist & is 12News trying to one-up Arizona's Family (KPHO/KTVK Phoenix) & have as big if not close to the biggest weather team in the Valley considering they already have Lindsay Riley, Krystle Henderson, Lauren Rainson, Chris Dunn, & Ginger Jeffries who came in last year when Lindsay was on maternity leave.

Or someone could be leaving...
