Truckin Daze and nights

Does anybody remember when overnight radio was competitive in country music? Back when there were lots of all night truckin shows? Some live from mega truck stops? Who was doing that stuff? Would be really cool to hear it again and walk between the idlin trucks, all silver in the night to get a burger and fries and talk up some good ole------------oops. My Camaro had the best seat covers on I-95!

Seriously, what were the great truckin shows when overnights were live

I remember the Truckin' Bozo show out of WLW in Cincinnati featuring some good country music. But something happened to the music when the show went national and got carried on stations such as WWVA in Wheeling and WHAM in Rochester. Contractual reasons led to the music getting dropped and the show evolved to all-talk.

There was another overnight truckers show on 870 in New Orleans, although I don't know much about it. It may have been called The Road Gang or something like that.

I can remember The Interstate Radio Network ( IRN ) with Gene Davis and Sunny Stevens. Nashville's WSM I believe was their biggest station but it did air on many FM stations around the country.

I believe IRN had more/less "died" when many of their stations had made the switch to Blair Garner's After Midnight.

I had a friend who actually was a board-op for IRN. The night they switched to Blair Garner, the inside hotline rang..It was Sunny Stevens !! Screaming and cussing the board-op about how his station had dumped them in favor of Garner and how "After Midnight" sucks..etc... The conversation ended with Miss Sunny screaming "..just F**K YOU !!!" Classy lady !! UGH !!

He still has the tape of that phone call.

For awhile the music was indeed off the "Truckin' Bozo". It subsequently came back though also mixed with Clasiic Rock tunes (hey is a 26 year old truck driver automatically into old country?) Before the Bozo, there was "Interstate 7".

Yes, that was Charlie Douglas on WWL. Came on in the early 70's, if I recall. A great country truckin' show, and it may have been the first.

But the granddaddy - if not the first - has to be Bill Mack out of WBAP in Fort Worth. If I'm not mistaken, Bill is still doin' the good work on sattelite radio.

There was also an excellent host on WWVA - his name was Buddy somethin' - anyone remember? Had a real fun one-to-one type on-air demeanor.

The guy at WWVA was Buddy Ray I believe. He as great to listen to. WWVA is just yet another example of what was once a great radio station that has turned into a total wasteland.

On the other 1170, there was KVOO/Tulsa's Billy Parker, truckin' overnight through most of the seventies.

Dave Nemo's "Road Gang" was on WWL New Orleans, then WLAC Nashville (at at a time both, and more)

Bill Mack was on WBAP. *Then they started that ABC/Midnight Cowboy network on a few ABC O&O's and non ABC stations.

Dale Summers aka Bozo was on WLW/Cincy.

Larry Scott was on KWKH Shreveport.

The stations I always were amazed that did *NOT* have turcking shows were WSM Nashville and KOMA in Oklahoma City. KOMA could have easliy stayed oldies, and done a full service and fun alternative to country music kind of program.

Most sincerely ... The aforementioned Gene Davis
