Truckin' Tom Cookin' Kent

Born in Winston-Salem but called Cleveland his true home for decades. WIXY, WHBQ, WMJX, WGCL, WLS and WAVA were among his many stops. Also one heck of an entrepreneur who made it big in self-syndication... twice!

Lance with the details:

When I was Program Director at WKIX/Raleigh, we ran his show every evening. He was tireless about producing any liners we sent (and we sent them daily) and therefore the show sounded local (well, as local as a network show can sound). I met him on a couple of occasions and found him to be genuine and just an all around good guy. Man, he was driven.

I listen to his show every night - AND The Ultimate Party on Saturday night. Syndicated on KARY 100.9, Cherry FM, Yakima. This is a tragedy beyond words in the radio business. This man helped build an empire in syndication...and his catchphrases held strong with his listeners. He always liked to "jump out of your radio and smack you on the headdddddaahhhh!...in the most loving way." "John Q and Mary M. Radio Public," all of his crazy blurbs in between songs...his off-key singing...he's gotten me through one too many pizza delivery and DoorDash shifts in the car.
Now I know why Bill Shannon took over the 6pm PT timeslot the past several weeks.
We've lost him - way too soon.

Rest in peace, "Young Thomas."

My guess is the TK network becomes Bill Shannon's (and Steve Kent's) to take over.

Too soon... :(

He was a staple on Cleveland radio (WIXY/WGCL) for a while. And really improved the airwaves back and forth on WMJI (When it was still good). I'd kind of lost touch with his shows since I gave up on terrestrial radio in Cleveland. But heard he was on the internet doing some shows that may have also gone over-the-air in some markets..
