True Jazz Stations

In the early 60's, there were several real jazz stations on the air, commercial stations at that. One was owned in New Jersey by Dave Bruebeck. Does anyone know of commercial jazz stations today, even on AM?

Actually, the station is owned by Dave Kimball, whom I met last year, but is housed in the (Clint) Eastwood building. Dave also has a record and trinket shop, where the station is located, dedicated to jazz and his own jazz label.

Ah, yes. The Carmel station featured in "Play Misty For Me."

I heard an AM on 1450 in the Richmond, Virginia area back in the early 1990's, but that is long gone. I wonder if any other market could support a full time commercial jazz station?

I see more than one AM featuring standards refer to themselves as jazz, but Sinatra, Tony and Dean, while I love the music, just do not come across to me as jazz.

Unfortunately, It appears as if this station is going to be sold and almost certainly its traditional Jazz format is certain to die! Too bad! :(
 
For the record, KRML 1410 was never sold. The owner wanted way too much for it. Actually he was selling the station, his record shop and record label as a package. I looked into it.

So the station is still under original ownership and still jazz. And to the owner's credit, KRML is still broadcasting in stereo.

Middle Tennessee State University has a traditional jazz station also on the ropes due to state budget cutbacks. The state is looking at what a 100k signal will fetch them to solve their budget woes. The jazz purists are putting up a fight.

I'm sure the university can get a nice chunk of change for that signal. Perhaps they can stipulate that the jazz format remain on an HD side channel (if not the main channel). Of course, that's like consigning the format to limbo land since hardly anyone is listening to HD Radio at this point.

To be sure, jazz (and I regard smooth jazz as a sub-genre of the musical art form called jazz) is under attack. In this case the slow, subtle attack of neglect, particularly among young listeners. Is jazz not cool enough for kids? Or is it too hip for the room, so that the only thing young listeners can understand and respond to is Rihanna and anyone named Britney? Is jazz too stuck in the past, too elite? Is there not enough exposure to jazz in schools?

Whatever the case, terrestrial music radio is losing format diversity as it tries to capture the elusive young audience and paying a price in the process as neglected, die-hard radio listeners migrate over to internet radio with its cornucopia of variety.
