True Oldies 105.9 Reviews

Hello Everyone for those of you wanting to hear 105.9 online go to www.thestreamcenter.com and typw in WJZW in the call letter search. I have been listening online here in sunny North Carolina since Saturday afternoon and I must say I am very happy with what I have heard so far :)

The new station offers a great mix of 60s and 70s along with a few gems as well as a few great tracks I do not recall ever played on WBIG (in the Oldies 100 Big 100 60s and 70s hits days)

This post is not for gripes about corporate, I just thought it would be nice to create a post where everyone could post their reviews of True Oldies 105.9 and submit ideas.

IMHO the first thing they should do is bring Johnny Dark on board as he knows the ganre and has an awesome personality. I would love to hear Goldy do a 7 to midnight shift but I don't think that will happen as he seems very happy in Fayatteville, NC.

The music selection on 105.9 is GREAT but I know it has only been on the air three days and alot can change as far as music goes depending on the program director. I think we have a real winner with 105.9 and the station has unlimited potential.

Unlikely that there will be any local personalities. If you go to the True Oldies website, you'll find a list of the affiliates, BTW.

I imagine this is just part of Citadel's cash flow issue. Imus in the morning, True Oldies the rest of the day. They get a DC outlet for the I-Man plus a DC outlet for Scott Shannon's True Oldies channel. Win-Win for Citadel and they aren't paying anything extra for it.

Great. A crabby old bastard Imus, who is not funny at all with oldies for the rest of the crabby old people. No matter how good it sounds, oldies is still a 55 plus demo and no agency on earth buys it.

What a waste of good air space. How can oldies be making a comeback. Are listeners getting younger.
This will satisfy two egos in Farid's company, shannon and imus. It wont cost much to run, but it wont make much either.

What problem do you have with listeners 55 and older? You'll be one soon enough...
Just because someone is over 55, there shouldn't be any radio for them? What kind of sense does that make??

Now that PPM's are in use, you'll notice the huge numbers WOGL-FM and WCBS-FM are getting. It can work in DC also. That's why oldies are back in NYC and now back in DC.

You don't have to like Imus. He just brings in a LOT of money, that's all. Apparently I'm not the only one who likes him, given the revenue he generates.

Imus in the Morning, PD Steve Allan in PM drive (per DCRTV), on the bird otherwise.

Citadel really has to cut down costs if it's employing an on-air PD in a top-10 market like D.C. Also, when you're on the bird all your music goes through the format's studio.

While I don't usually like bird fed programming, I must admit, this sounds good! Kind of like WXTR/XTRA 104's early years in the format, very music intensive, minimal jock intrusion (ok, in this case NO jock intrusion!). I'd never heard the True Oldies Channel before. WBIG, as Oldies/Big 100, was more personality driven, and while I like that kind of radio, I think it's days are pretty much over.

Like I said before, it's a demo that attracts an older audience that advertising agency types rarely buy.

The dynamic has not changed since this resurgence in oldies. The demo is still older and not as desirable as the 25-54 demo.

One thing that is attractive is the relative low cost of running a syndicated program like true oldies. What an embarrassment for a market like DC to have to import a format or talent from NYC. A big waste of a frequency.

I've heard this argument before. Doesn't seem to hold water, especially in PPM rated markets. WOGL in Philadelphia is the #3 station in town. This is one of the few stations Infinity/CBS didn't flip to Jack (a Greater Media owned station in town beat 'em to that by a few days), and, judging from the results, I'll bet they are damned happy they didn't flip it. Station has a BIG spot load; the demographic doesn't seem to be hurting any.

Of course, some will refute what I've stated by saying WOGL is not really an oldies station, that it positions itself as 'classic hits.' To this, I say, listen on line. If it's round, and it's orange, you might call it a tangerine, or an orange, or a clementine...but it's still citrus fruit, tasting about the same!

And exactly what else would one flip 105.9 to?

How did Imus play this morning in DC??? I noticed listening that they seemed to use lots of oldies bumpers today and just a few of his usual country tunes. This seems very different from the usual music on the show. Did it work???

The best DJ with the most glowing personality, a memory like a steel-trap, THOMAS GROOMS, would be perfect for the True Oldies stations...his knowledge and personal friendships with the oldies musicians could be perfect for this station. I think one of the ways, and perhaps the only way this station will rise to the top, would be if he hosted a call-in show...and could discuss with us younger crowd..some of his personal experiences with these oldies musicians...as he seems to be friends or at least have true oldies' stories to tell about many of these artists being featured.

Imagine hearing from someone, who was there, to tell us personal stories regarding these artists' lives and careers. He is extremely modest and is NOT a name dropper. I don't know him, but I have a mutual friend; and I've seen him MCing events and he is one funny guy! His humor, good looks and brilliant memory is one way this station can make it. He even KNEW the Beatles...not knew of..but actually knew these guys and this is from a very reliable source... :)

If I were in charge, I'd beg him to come back to the station and host a call-in show...imagine, he knew Jim Morrison and so many other artists, whose songs we are hearing... Any comments?? Thanks for reading my post. I appreciate all lovers of oldies...

I think Thomas may have been a survivor and not been voted off the island? ???
